Alright, I've been lurking here for a little while now so I figure it's time to post up. I got my first Becker and first fixed blade about 3 weeks ago, and I'm loving it. I definitely see more Beckers in my future. I really liked the look and feel of the BK11, however, after putting it to some heavy use the last couple weeks I determined that it needed some handles. I couldn't justify spending $30 for handles on a $30 knife so I decided to make my own. After gathering some very useful information from this site I figured it wouldn't be too difficult a job. I'll stop blathering now and just show some pictures... I know that's all we really care about anyway.

My first Becker with my first homemade micarta grips!

I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out. The best part is the handles cost me $0 since i had everything i needed just laying around.

Nice job, and I foresee many more Beckers in your future. Welcome to the Becker forum.

cwarrenm, excellent first mod, first post, and welcome to the forum!

What did you make the micarta out of, and how did you recess the hex bolts into the handles?

The BK-11 is a gateway knife, betware.

Well done my friend!! I like how you made the scales. They look good, and yes the Necker is a gateway knife to the rest of the Becker lineup :D

Hope you stick around!! Welcome to the Becker asylum. ;)

Thanks for the compliments. I made the micarta with left over fiberglass resin and khaki material from 3 worn out pairs of shorts I was going to cut up into rags. The shorts were dark brown, dark khaki, and light khaki. I layered the colors and after sanding it almost looks like wood grain. I recessed the hex nuts by drilling holes slightly smaller than the diameter of the nuts halfway through the grips. I then hammered the nuts in which made for a nice, tight, flush fit. After that, I sanded the nuts down along with the rest of the handle.

I already have plans for my next Becker when funds become available.

Great pattern on the micarta. It seems like making micarta slabs is pretty tricky, but went easy for you? Anyway, nice mod.

awesome.

I discovered a neat way to get hex holes into micarta (does not work with G10!):

1) Cut the head of a bolt or threaded rod that fits the nuts you're going to use.
2) Chuck this into a drill press, leaving about 1.5" or so exposed, and thread one of the nuts onto the end, leaving 1/4-1/2" of rod protruding BELOW the nut
3) get your micarta handy, which has been pre-drilled
4) heat the nut with a plumbing torch until dull red
5) press!
You might need to clean up some stuff and do it a second time - be careful to maintain alignment.
Test on a piece of scrap first!

Thanks for all the compliments, guys. Daizee, that method sounds tricky but I might give it a shot next time.
