Hey All,

I post a while back about the mods i'd done to my BK-11. If you're curious to see what it looked like before when it was all shiny, you can check it out here.

I've been EDCing my 11 for almost a year now, and I probably don't have enough good things to say about it. To give some background about the use, I work in a livestock feed mill. My knife gets abused... a lot, though most of it is not intentionally neglectful, it's just a hard environment for knives. Any given week, I may cut open between 100 to 1000 or more woven polyurethane or quadruple ply heavy paper bags, containing a range of materials from wet feeds covered with light acids to prevent mold to rock salt and limestone. Some of these are harder on an edge/blade than others. This usually results in me having to sharpen the edge at least once a week, though that can range from as long as a month, to as short as a day (see limestone, haha). The other thing is that our mill is over 60 years old, with quite a bit of equipment that requires a lot of love to keep moving. I know I will be chastised for this, but I regularly use my knife as a screwdriver, pry bar, wire stripper/cutter, etc. though I am still very careful to not to attempt things that are overly stressful. There have been a few times I've had to put some time in reshaping the edge, but even then, it's usually no more than an hour. This little bugger has just trucked on, I've been super impressed. Here's a few pictures of how it looks after all this abuse.

It's held up so well. You can see along the blade how the edge is a little farther back than it was, but that's just sharpening it so many times, and fixing a big nick a put in it. I need to go and re-darken the patina on it, but really other than the scratches it has held up superbly. The only gripe I had on it at first was how it felt in the hand, and this was quickly remedied by adding the scales. The handle still is a little short, I could stand to have maybe another half inch, but it isn't anything that would hold me back from using it. Can't say enough good things about the BK-11! It's taken a beating and keeps on trucking!

It's always great to hear reports from people who really put their knives to work! In a typical week I open a couple packages, maybe cut some plastic ties, perhaps some light yard work - it's nice to know what a knife is actually capable of handling.

I love the filework on your scales. That is about as good as it gets. I see a lot of people do patterns that I dont quite like, or they aren't quite even... yours is just right!

Thanks for this excellent post. I have those same scales on my Camillus 11, which hasn't seen any use; I use my modified 11 all the time, tho. Great little workhorse. One question, though: neck carry, belt or pocket? I'm curious with heavy use which you use and find the most convenient.

For a long time I carried just in my back pocket, but the last couple months I switched to scout carry. It's made a huge difference in comfort as well as convenience. I do a lot of transitioning between standing and sitting and it's easily the most comfortable. It just took a little time to get used to sheathing it behind yourself.

Looks like the curve of the belly has changed. And from the look of the choil vs the blade, maybe... ~1/16in - 3/32in of blade has been sharpened away? Am I anywhere close on that?

And its good to see a well used blade :).

Good eye! Yes, I'd say 1/16th is about right. The belly shape change is mainly from a pretty decent nick I put in it. I opted to change the curve slightly to fix it rather than take more metal off the entire blade to maintain the shape.

Good work on the reshaping, it really looks good, as well as still very functional. I just thought it looked a bit different, and am glad its not just my eye/mind playing tricks on me :).

And if you're liking scout carry, you might also give crossdraw a try. Its the same idea, but on the front just to the left of the beltbuckle (if you're right handed). I've been playing with that lately, and have really liked it for most small-medium sized knives. When you sit down you don't get any weird pressure like you can with some blades in scout carry position, and its just as easy to get to, and a bit easier to re-sheath. Maybe worth giving a shot sometime :).

And I will echo the comments about the nice work on the handle scales. Are those G10? Did you make them yourself?

They're Kryptoglows. I'm not sure what they are made of exactly, but it's some sort of light poly material. They actually glow in the dark too, though you wouldn't guess by looking at them. They're very comfortable and big props to Krypto for the great work he did on them.

Hey Badger......

Thank you for your business, the kind words and your post and pix..... It is always very gratifying to me when someone who USES a blade every day chooses and likes one of my blades...... It is the reason I started manufacturing blades after got a.couple for myself........ Your words made my day.....
