Hey guys, so recently i purchased a custom sheath for my BK-14 from 710. I love it. it looks better, takes up less space, and doesnt dull the knife. BUT when actually using the knife, it seems to dull substantially faster than my other knives with the same steel.. i use my 14 much more often than any other knife, but have tested it one on one with another knife, and it seemed to slow much faster.. Is this because of my sharpening skills?

you may be sharpening it at too acute of an angle for what you're using it for, alternatively however unlikely you may have received a knife with a bad heat treat, my 14 is on par or better as far as wear and tear compared to the rest of my 1095 and 1095cv knives.

I haven't heard of this issue. I have been EDC-ing my 14 for several months and have not had any problems .
If you have access to a good sharpening system like KME, maybe you could use that to ensure that you're sharpening at the correct angle. Just a thought..

My BK-11 sees a lot of use and it keeps a good edge for quite awhile.
What degree are you sharpening at? As Wambo mentioned your edge may be too acute.
20 degrees(40 degree inclusive) gives it a good "working" edge.
Too much steeper and you could definitely end up with chips, rolls, and more frequent dulling.

hey guys thanks for the reply's, i put a 30 degree inclusive on it, could that be why?

Depends on what you're using it for but yeah a 40 inclusive has always done me justice on my knives, I only have a few blades with a thicker or thinner edge than that. What kind of dulling are you seeing? chips rolls etc? or rounding of the edge? also what do you use it for most?

I EDC both an 11(neck) and a 14(pocket), and both have a pretty heavy convex edge. Idk what the angles are, but they are pretty acute. I've never had any problems with dulling, whatsoever. The 14(top) gets much harder abuse that the 11(bottom), seeing chores like cutting strapping, boxes, shaving door facings, whittling shims and wedges, etc.....the 11 only does food cutting, and the occasional letter or box opening.

I like that 14 Yah got there bsmith. Reminiscent of a nessmuk. Very cool

Ty bro, its a funny story behind that mod. I basically removed someone elses mistake, after a failed attempt at jimping. After the work, I liked it, and gave him his cash back for the blade.

sorry for the way late response, and some rolling was involved, i just put a 40 degree on the knife ill see how that goes!
