Hello, all. Thought I'd post up a little fire kit I put together with the 14 my wife gave me for my birthday a few months back.

I'd also won a giveaway on another forum for a "you finish it" fire steel from SkogKniv and they both arrived on the same day. It just seemed right to put them together!

I used a fair bit of waxed 4 strand jute cord I had laying around as a fire steel lanyard, a wrap for the fire steel handle and as a pull cord to remove the tin, since I managed to make the pouch for it a hair tight. I recycled a hack saw blade for the striker and whittled a bit of stick I found for the pull handle. It can all be used as tinder in a real emergency, as well.

Figured you folks might get a kick out of it!

Edit: Of course, seeing the pics, I realize these were taken before everything was complete. Figures...
I'll try to remember to get a couple new pics in the morning...

That is pretty neat. It would be a bit bulky I think for me, but I already carry a metric ton of stuff on my belt. I do like how it all fits into a nice kit.

Good looking setup. Is your BK14 stripped to strike the firesteel using the spine, or do you use your knife edge?

Thanks, all! Obviously, this isn't a 24/7 carry kit. Not likely to need a fire driving the kids to school, but I keep a small LMF and striker in a pocket, anyway.

Here's a new pic of the finished kit with the hacksaw striker and wooden pull toggle attached. The 14 is currently riding in another little sheath I made on my belt.

That looks like a beefy handle on the firesteel. I guess you'll have a lot of "purchase" when striking it. The leather looks really good.

Pretty cool setup all together. Looks like what a primitive hunter would carry haha (I mean that in a good way).

It fits my over-sized idjit mittens! It arrived as two chunks of compressed bamboo cutting board epoxied together with a thin liner, a locking ring on one end and a fire steel on the other.

I whittled it down, carved the recess for the whipping, then sanded and waxed the bejeebus out of it.

No offense taken, RogueBowie! I was going for a bit of primitive when I stitched it up. The leather's thick enough to last, but I wasn't 100% on how the stitching would hold up, since this is the first time I've stitched a box this way, so I went for stout over pretty.

nice kit :)
It's ok to use the knife edge to strike ferro rod ,so you can ditch hacksaw blade/lmf striker or whatever.... if you carry a multitool or SAK the spine on saw blade works great too :D

I know the spine is good to go, but the striker lanyard also helps lock everything together by keeping the steel locked to the loop. Harder for me to lose stuff that way.

Besides, my wife bought the 14 for my birthday, so I'm going to refrain from much modding until I beat it half to death. Once it's prettied up from use, I'll have fewer cold shoulder sandwiches when I get around to making it beautiful. ;)
