Hey guys, here is my bk14 stripped and given a forced vinegar patina.
I also convexed the edge and put of some zytel handle scales

I'm hoping to put some jimping on the spine, but I only have a triangular file and a round file..

How difficult is it to use hand tools to put jimping on the spine?

And also, I'm using sandpaper and leather to convex the edge, and I can't seem to get the upper third of the edge as sharp as the lower portion of the edge

**((BTW, I'm only 15 and trying to keep saving my money so I'm going to make do with what I have))

Thanks

Hi mac, welcome to the forums, your bk14 looks great. Adding jimping to the spine really isn't as hard as you think with hand tools. Check out my thread and you can see the mods I just did to mine.

The needle diamond files I got where about $13 I think shipped. Not nowhere near as expensive as I thought they would be. Took me about 20 minutes with them to add the jimping. Good luck with mods.

Welcome!

Great job so far on that 14  Its not exactly difficult to produce the results you want, its just time consuming. Do it smart and plan out where you want them. Mark it with a sharpie marker, then get to work with those files.

For your sharpening problem, try wrapping the leather around a dowel or handle (something cylindrical).

Best of luck!

Looks great. I was thinking about trying to jimp mine a bit. Doesn't hurt retention in the sheath does it?

Sadly it does, but I was looking at buying another sheath anyways as the factory one seems to dull the blade

You can tell in the pictures I messed up the first part of the jimping, so I filed it back down and re did it.. it's not very pretty but it's usable, hope you enjoy

Great job Mac! I do my jimping by hand. What I like is being able to slowly go at it and get them even by applying more pressure towards the front or back to get the spacing even. Same with the side view, you can even it out a little at a time until they all match. May not be perfect but its hard to tell without looking hard. I'll post pics in a bit.

Keep up the good work!

NCSlice is right.

For a first attempt, that's not a bad job of jimping. My first attempt was no better. But now, it looks 'factory'. ;)

Thats a good start for sure. Id show mine but I never got around to it. Not because I didnt want to. Not sure why, just didnt. Good for you, keep up the good work!

I ended up filing it down and there is a small curve in the spine and it's quite comfortable for my hand ! For some reason my pics op won't upload I will try once I can
