I know this is a crazy question but I purchased a Bk 14 with a sheath. This sheath came with this thing on the side of it and all my previous sheaths don't have this. Is this thing supposed to help hold the knife in the sheath or do I remove it and take it off because a knife stays in the sheath without it. What is its purpose? Thanks

New locking device for the sheath. The newer ones are made from a softer plastic; the tab prevents the knife from falling out if/when the sheath loosens up, especially if worn upside down as a neck knife.

It is a lock since the retention nub has been known to wear over time.
It is likely due to the most cost efficient fix was to design a retention device that bolts on instead of redesigning the sheath/knife interface as well as the cost of the new machinery required to manufacture a new sheath.

You should be able to remove it for now. That is, if you don't feel that it is necessary for your carry method.
If your nub wears down, you can put the cap back on. :D

I kind thought that but wasn't really sure since none of my other 14's had one. Thought it might be something for shipping the knife. But anyway thanks for the input and the answer

Ok cool. I like it. Thanks

I wish they sold them seperately. I'd like ta get s couple for my other knife sheaths

I believe the lock jus unscrews from the sheath, and I also believe the lock is modular and will transfer to another 14/24 sheath. That doesn't solve your issue of more than one lock, but its good if you don't want to use a particular sheath. Food for thought.

Of course, I haven't gotten a newer 14 or 24 so I wouldn't know from experience. I ditched all the stock sheaths for my 14 and 24 anyway and got 710 (much better looking and the retention is never suspect)
