I was wondering if anyone might have a Bk-17 and BK-7 that could take a picture of the two side by side. I have the 7 and am curious how the 17 compares in size.

Thanks
Greebe

Here is one.

Thanks. That was what I was looking for. It looks like a dandy size. My wife and I are moving out to some semi remote property and I want to get a new knife for all day carry around the property. The 7 is a little large for that. I have a few other knives but nothing that I feel really fits the bill. A forum member is sending me his BK-2 to try out. After handling it a little I think I am going to try to decide between a 2, 10, 17. At this point I am thinking the 17 would be the best choice for carry and maybe a 2 for the camp. We will be living out of a yurt tent for most of the summer with the bare essentials so a good knife will be a necessity.

Wow, that sounds like an amazing summer. You wont be disappointed in the 17 as a smaller back up if that's what you decide. Very capable for its size.

Let us know what you decide on. I hope you come back with lots of pics and tell us how great your summer was.

WOW your summer plans sound amazing! I'm so jealous.

I recently picked up a BK10 and find it to be like a light weight BK2 that does everything better except prying (don't do it) and batoning (use and ax).
something to consider.

moded the clip some.

Thanks guys. This move will be an adventure that is for sure. It is something my wife and I have been looking forward to for some time. The part that is going to make it a real challenge is doing it with a 5 month old and 2.5 year olds sons. I have a BK-2 on loan from a member here. It is a pretty substantial piece of gear. Probably a little more then I want to carry all day.

I am starting to wonder if the BK-16 might be better. I really like the looks of the 17, but I like to use the tip of the knife with my thumb pushing on the back of the tip and the clip points are not as comfortable that way. So the 16 probably is better in that respect, but that 17 is just sweet looking.

I own a BK17 and it's a very nice knife. Unfortunately I haven't yet figured out how to best utilize it for my everyday needs. I bought a BK10 to replace it when the BK9 proves to be too cumbersome.

Tough decision. Made even harder by not being able to hold them first. That would help a lot.All you can do is try your best to pick the one that seems to talk to you the most. Then..buy the rest of them later :D Luckily no matter which you choose...Its still a Becker and will do the job.

Thanks for the replies. Still undecided.

Mauser -- Thanks for the picture of the two. Any chance you could take a picture of the spines of the blades? I really like the looks of the 17 but I really like to be able to use my thumb on the spine near the tip of the blade for carving and when there is a sharp clip point it hurts the thumb. That is the only reason I am starting to think about getting the 16.

Thanks again,
Greebe

Then try not to talk back to them........ in public. :D

One reason I like the 16 over 17 is that the blade is far quicker to clean off. Also it doesn't chew up a baton quite as quick when cutting kindling. I think for all day carry the 16/17 would be a great choice. 16 is by far my favorite becker.

I haven't tried the 17 yet, but damn is the 16 a great knife. I'd pay $100+ for it if it weren't as cheap as it is.

I don't know if I am familiar with the grip you are talking about but hopefully these help.

About as far as I could get my thumb.

I like to do it this way with my finger.

Thanks guys. The 16 does look like a nice performer.

Mauser-

Thanks for the additional pictures.

Sorry I was not clear on what I was trying to describe about the thumb grip thing. It is one of those things that when you start trying to explain it in type, it starts to not even make sense to yourself.:D

Anyways a picture is worth 1000 words right. So here is what I was trying to describe. As I am in my office the picture is simulating carving a piece of wood, but I am holding a piece of non metallic conduit instead.

I am a spoon carver / bowl carver and this is a grip that I use a lot. You apply force with your thumb on the tip of the blade while using a twisting motion with the hand holding the knife. In this manner it allows for precise deep cuts in corners or edges of spoons and bowl. You can use the curve of the tip of the blade to cut more efficiently then the flat portion of the blade.

With a clip point ground so thin on top, the back of the blade digs into your thumb and makes a long carving session suck. So while I think the 17 is bad aspen, I think for the style that I use my knife the 16 might be more comfortable.

Thanks
Greebe

Ok 2 hands, I understand what you mean now. That picture definitely cleared it up. And I would agree the 16 is the way to go for that. Doing that with a 17 would get annoying quick. So a spoon and bowl carver, neat. Hopefully you can share something you carved with a Becker someday. And don't forget to come back and tell us about that yurt trip.

B. Mauser -- BTW I send you an email.

OK, I will check my mail.

Unless you just like the aesthetics of a clip point or are needing to pierce something, I believe the drop point is a far superior design. Just my .02 :)

Clip point = Killing
Drop point = Working

Buy both the BK16 and BK17, adn then take them to the next step...mod them both.

Here is what I did with mine.

BK17 - paint stripped, handle stippled, mustard patina and convex edge
BK16 - paint stripped, handle stippled, removed factory grid marks up to 500 grit, and convex edge.

Sweet knives by the way. Sorry that I missed it until now. Somehow this thread fell through the cracks. Thanks for sharing.
