BK-17 tip defect?

I got my BK-17 some time ago and striped the finish. I'd noticed that the tip seemed a little blunt, but forgot about it and didn't do anything with the knife for ages. Looking at several stripped Bk-17 pictures I seriously think that the tip might be wrong. I will try to get a better picture of the tip later. Is this a common defect? Any suggestions of corrective measures? Names of good repair services? I imagine my warranty is gone anyway.

here are two old pictures I managed to find. My camera is missing and my cell cam is crap.

its kinda hard too see, but it looks like it does not come to a very pointy point right? I guess maybe when they where putting the edge on they didn't get the tip so good. I would run it across a course stone a bit first then sharpen as per usual that should get the tip nice and pointy , as a hard use woods knife a personaly would not want the point too fine as that may induce bending or even a break. hope this helps and welcome too the forums!!!!!!

Like tfields said, throw a coarse stone across it and it will fix it. These knives are sharpened by hand, with this one, they just didn't take as much off to get the tip sharpened. Over time you will notice it come to more of a point as you sharpen it. I wouldn't worry about it TOO much, but that is just me.

The only way to make a blunt tip pointy, is to take off from the spine. The only way.

It does look a little blunted from that second pic.

My 17 is a splinter picker. Very pointy.

If you can grab a couple of macro shots of the tip, we'll go from there.

You can fix it, if you have the desire and hand to do it. If not, contact Kabar and see what they say.

yeah, take a little off the spine. You want to straight-clip it anyway. ;)

I have seen this before from you Moose. When the edge of my 2 got all F-ed up from learning to use the work sharp, I took it back down from the spine and gave it a nice point!

Heed Moose's advice. Real easy to do with a stone or even sandpaper on a block.

Wow. The first pics you posted made it look like it just needed to be sharpened up a bit. That last pic looks pretty bad. If it came that way I think you need to contact Kabar and ask about a replacement.

Damn, that tip is jacked up. We gotta do something about this.

Option 1- Self repair. You are gonna have to take 3-4mm off that clip to get it back to a point. With that much removal, I recommend a belt sander, a bucket of water, some duct tape, and an 80gt belt. We can work out the specific techniques should you decide to go this route.

Option 2- Email/call Kabar. Make sure you send the pics along with the email. Talk to them and tell them the whole story. Ship it back and wait for a new 17 in the mail.

Option 3- If option 2 doesn't work out, I'll do something to get it fixed. Either a new blade from my cabinet, or send it to me to regrind.

Someone was AFG on that one.

was the edge ever sharpened by the OP? doesn't look much like the factory edge.

i've seen a lot of tips that look like that after a bad round of self-sharpening - tips get rounded

easy enough to fix, though, with apparently offers of assistance even, looks good to go

not sure that it's call for a warranty replacement though, but KaBar is known to be generous

It looks like a tip that was rounded by dragging the point off the corners of a Sharpmaker.

I did use a worksharp on it. I know that the tip wasn't sharp/correct when I got it, but you may be correct that I inadvertently made it worse. I can tell that it looks worse now than it did then. I should have sent it back then and not waited all this time.

That sucks but it can still be saved. Now its a good project for you to learn on.

Yeah, well........Kabar ain't gonna swap ya for that one, and...........neither am I. :D

BUT!!!!!!! It can be fixed using the same device.

Let us know how we can hp.

the worksharp is an evil, tip-eating device.

Well, I wouldn't have swapped it or sent it back to be replaced anyway. I went to the work to strip it, so it's mine even if it caught fire as a result. I'll try to make it a straight clip. I'll go get some wet/dry sandpaper as has just been suggested to me. Thanks a bunch everyone. I'll try to do a post of the repair process.

Also plan on getting some more Beckers down the road. A BK9 and a brute if they ever come out. I'll invest in some very long stones for those.

Good luck, brother.

Be sure and keep us updated, as this might be a very important project that others will want to see.
