BK-2 for deer?

I want to get a BK-2, but I normally dont use a large knife for field dressing. I was wondering if anyone uses them as their "deer" knife?

No. But you could if you HAD to. I think you would tire much more quickly with a BK2 vs a smaller knife. Tired hands/fingers make mistakes. Look at this as an opportunity to either be the first to use one for field dressing a deer, or to get a BK14 for your smaller knife. Both knives are awesome. The BK2 would crack/chop the pelvic bone with NO worries thats for sure.

I have field dressed many deer. The BK 2 that I have would work. It would work for splitting the pelvis but I don't do that. I use a pocket knife, cut around the anus, tie it off, pull it out from the inside of the pelvis. When you got to skinning, the handle of the knife, mine is rounded, could be used to "fist" off the hide if you wanted to keep the score marks "knife cuts" off if it. It would make braintanning much easier and not cause you to pop holes in it when working the hide. My favorite knife for deer is an older Effingham Blackjack Trailguide. You could make the BK2 work but it would not be ideal.

As others have said, it would work but ... nah. It's a great knife to take deer hunting (though I prefer my BK9 for that) because it rocks for making blinds, and works well enough tor cutting through brush. For cleaning deer, I'd be reluctant to use any knife with that long a blade. IMO the BK11 (or BK14 if you prefer) is much better for that task.

Thanks guys, I have dressed over 20 whitetail, and I have always used a pocketknife. I was just looking to see if anyone had done it with a "big" Becker.

I choke up on mine. It works great cutting through the sternum. The blade design allows to not go to deep and get into the stomach or where you don't want to cut. For cutting off the hide you can't ask for a nicer sweep. Good luck.

You stand to the right of the deer, BK-2 in your right hand, raised high above your right shoulder.
Execute your golf swing from right to left, finishing past your left leg.
Roll, the deer over and drag away from the entrails.
ta-da: venison

(I think the BK-2 is a bit big for it, tho Clich says he likes oversize knives for the job)

Grind a swedge. Makes the point more workable :D never did get to try this on on a whitetail. But daz is right, I feel better to have too much knife and not need it then to little knife, although you may end up dicing meat you didn't want to. Go with a bk11

I like that swedge - I don't know in the rest of the world, but in WV the whitetail aren't so big. Going to be a little tight inside the cavity with a BK2.

In a few months, the clip point or drop point Tweener is going to float your boat.

I will let you know buddy, I will be taking this one with me this hunting season.

Just had this discussion with my neighbor... New to hunting.... hoping for his first deer this weekend....... letting him borrow my new BK2........ to try it out...... he has a BK11 that may suit him better for the deer..... but it is hard to beat the BK2 for all the other tasks he may encounter in the woods.

Hey Josh, have you had your deer season in Ohio land yet this year?

The first gun season is the week after Thanksgiving. I am usually close to tagged out by then (4 deer) but this year has been a tough archery season for me. I sat 7 hours today, and didnt see a hair! Im not picky either, brown=down.

OLJ get that BK2 and take with you.

Unless you have a 11 or 14 just carry your BK13 around your neck. I think it would work fine for skinning deer.
