So after some use with the factory coating, I decided to strip this puppy down.

Good old fashion Yellow Mustard:thumbup:

For some reason that is what has worked best for me over the years, go figure.

And for some reason it is less prone to surface rust as opposed to using vinegar, lemon/lime juice, etc. (no idea why, just an observation)

That really looks sharp. Can you give some tips on how you applyed it,
how long you left it on and what brand yellow was used?
Many thanks.

I have found plain old publix yellow mustard to work best.

I first disassembled

I then applied a heavy coating(so that no blade could be seen) and left it on for about 30min or so.

Then I used my fingers and wiped off the excess mustard so that just a thin film was left (this is the most important step since oxygen is needed to allow the patina to take). As long as you use you fingers to remove the excess, you shouldn't worry about not leaving enough mustard on the blade. I then allow it to sit for another 30-45min.

Then wash off, dry off, and enjoy.

Also don't forget to oil it up prior to putting the scales back on.

Nice!!!

I was gonna ask what you used but you already answered. Good job on it.

I wonder how many of our breathren know the Publix brand? For anyone wondering, Publix is a grocery store chain in the Southeast US. Great patina job, the blade looks awesome.

That look is really growing on me. It almost looks case hardened. I'm pulling the plochman's on mine. Did you do any polishing beforehand?

Just unidirectional (spine to grind) 220 grit to make sure i was down to the bare 1095 and got off any residual coating. Although after the patina took, I must say it is as smooth as a baby's butt now.

I also quenched in hot water pre and post patina
