Hey guys i was asking about getting a good new survival knife and the people on this site told me to get a Becker BK 2 or a BK 7. In your opinion which knife is better? what specific qualities is each better than the other in? thanks for any help!

the 7 will be a better slicer, but the BK2 will be better for batonning through wood. The beloved BK2 is the most popular of the Becker knives, but it really depends on your end use and how you use your knives. If you plan to process a lot of wood with ease, I would go with the BK9 due to it's length and will have a superior advantage over others in this area. If you want something with less cutting precision but is HEFTY by all nature of the word and can chop through a lawn mower (it has been done) then the BK2 is your answer. Right in the middle sits the BK7. long enough to chop with precision cutting ability, but too long for the real "bush camp knife" feel. The handle ergos are the same on all so that's not a worry. Good luck. You can find pics galore in this forum comparing the BK's next to eachother. Have a look and tell us what you decide!

FYI, the BK2 has a 1/4" thick blade while the BK7 and BK9 have 3/16" thick blades.

man, that's like asking which is better: pancakes or waffles.
the BK2 has a 1/4" thick blade around 5 1/2" long, the BK7 has a blade 7" long and 3/16" thick.
Both cut, slice, and chop well.
BK2 is actually heavier if you're counting ounces.
BK2 splits wood better, BK7 makes a better draw knife (more room to grip)
both have the same handles.

Thats a hard one.

I think the only thing the BK7 does better then the BK2 is slice, I can also get the BK7 sharper then the BK2 (thinnner Blade)

I have both and they both get used. I keep my BK 2 in my BOB and my BK 7 goes with me camping. I like the "Duce" because it is a prybar that can do a lot of things, including chopping in a pich.

In my mind they line up like this:

Chopping.......................BK2
Batoning........................BK2
Slicing...........................BK7
Fine work.......................BK2
Replacing the USMC F/U....BK7

I'd get the BK2.

I was in the same valley of decision. I went with BK2 first as my smaller camp fixed blade. I am used to working with the Khukuri, not many knives cut and chop like they do but they wont fit into my Maxped NeatFreak. LOL! The BK2 does and yet cuts and chops very well for such a small knife. I've reprofiled mine and convex edged, working towards mirror finished the edge. It slices as well as my other knives, shaves hair with no problem. Basically I went with it because it was smaller and easier to stash away yet packs a lot of performance.

Ta hell with this question, too tough to call. Both can walk in each others worlds, and cross many paths on different routes. Which one is better, neither, the both whoop ass like no body's business.

I like the BK2 most of all, mostly, because I don't think I can break it. I been sporting a 7 around the house lately, and its been doing fine.

Nothing like makin' tough choices when it comes to steel. I didn't have to make the choice, I just bought them both.

Doesn't really matter because you'll end up buying both and more over time. The 7 was my first.

The BK9 was my first, then two BK2's. Fairly recently got another 2 for general use, as one of the three is always in my wife's GHB and the other is geo-cach...er...umm....lost in the woods somewhere. Don't have a 7, but if I had to do it all over again, it would still be the 9 and 2 in that order. Will eventually get a 7, but I can't say I "need" one. There's nothing the 7 can do that either a 9 or 2 can't do, and from what I perceive to be the general consensus around here, the 9 does the big jobs better, and the 2 does the smaller and 'tween jobs as well as either of its more lengthy siblings.

Do you have to choose between the 2 and 7? Would the extra 2" and nominal added weight of a 9 disqualify it for your purposes?

Like most of the rest of us though, you'll likely end up with all three, so either flip a coin if you have to go for one at a time, or do an eenie-meenie-mynnie-moe if you're going to choose between three.
