Some of you will remember the Exotac nanostriker I've done a few posts with over the year. It is so far my favorite edc fire-starter. Part of the feed back I/we gave Rob on the nano was about the absence of tinder storage. Other things are in the works to address this but Rob has also come up with a prototype tinder-tube extension for the nano and sent me one to take to the field. The tube goes between the collar and the original bottom of the tube turning the original bottom into a tinder storage area. I sat at the waffle house the other night and made up a few fire-straws to try out with it.
I intend to put this and the BK13 Remora I have in the pouch on the BK-2 once I get it sewn right to work the way I want it too.
Since I was out taking photos for the website and testing a few things anyway, I thought I'd do one quick test on this as well. The fire straws are made from hollow coffee stirs. They are only about 1.5 inches long, and smaller in diameter than normal straws. When I was testing this out I had been out shooting photos on the side of the river for about four or five hours. The winds were high and the temps were low and I could barely feel my hands...great conditions for testing my emergency survival fire starter. The flames would have been bigger...but I didn't realize that I had only pulled about half of the tinder out till I was home and editing the photos. My hands were so cold (not wearing gloves) it did take a few strikes, but the longer "handle" does help a bit in cold conditions.
I liked this shot. I was holding the striker in place and pulling the rod...being misch a few strikes were a little too slow to get sparks but they through shavings into the PJCB tinder that sparked off as the tinder burned.
Next test tomorrow, I'll use this system start a fire to warm by while I am out doing a few other things with the BK-2. Hopefully I'll have the pouch finished by then too.
I was glad to see the new BK-13 came with it's own sheath and that it is just as sharp as the one I got with the BK-7. No real surprise there though.
There was a pleasant surprise on the side of the blade though.
