I recently purchased a Becker BK-2 knife based mainly on the reviews here. I am very pleased with the knife. The only think I really didn't like was the finish. Well, also the scales but first things first. I read several articles about stripping the finish, patinas, etc. I decided to go with a manganese parkerized finish.

I first striped the epoxy finish with paint stripper and sand paper.

I mixed the solution (I had for gun parts) and placed in an old sauce pan. Unfortunately, the knife was bigger than the pan so I had to do each half separately. I kept the solution covering as much as possible to overlap the area to avoid a water ring.

Out of the bath and before the parkerizer conditioner solution.

Oiled, sharpened and re-assembled.

Next up, new scales...

Very, very interesting. Looks good, and great work by the way. Manganese phosphate, 1095CV steel, interesting soup. Great ingredients gives you great products. Kudos. Whatchoo thinkin on the scales? Moose

there's a guy on here, The Sun, who does awesome custom scales and such..

Thanks, Moose. I have some Zebra wood that I thought might be interesting. I also have some Bubinga scraps. I don't know which would be better for knife scales. I'm just a wood hobbyist. I mainly do clocks and tables and such.

Good looking work, dmanny, and welcome to the Becker forum!

Now we're waiting to see what you come up with for the scales.;)

Thanks, dawsonbob! I figured after lurking here for 7 years I finally did something worth mentioning.

Well, that's a long time to just lurk, when you could have been here among friends.;)

I really like Parkerized finishes, myself. Nostalgia, mostly, I think, since I was a Marine brat, and almost everything was Parkerized when I was growing up. I like what you've done with the blade, now let's see the rest of the story.

you can always dremel the factory scales.. I really like the look.. That's my plan when I finally buy a Becker:o first day strip the coating and dremel the tools, I will also use the hollow scales for a back up supply of something out of a survival bag.. we'll see...

btw, welcome and excellent job.. thanks for the write up and pics..

With that blade, I would definetly go with the zebra wood, especially if you can extract a good grain pattern. Just sayin'. Moose
