BK 3 notch depth

A few years ago Ethan was considering reducing the top notch depth on the BK 3 after it broke on the nader pin opening a car door. Does anyone know if he went ahead and made changes or is it still the same depth?

I have not heard of any more BK 3 breakages, so I've been wondering.

Hey Snakebreaker .......

I haven't heard of any breakages either...... Our deliberate test to destruction required two stout firefighters to accomplish the dirty deed ...... In thirty years of service I know of only three breaks......One a decade ain't perfect but, it is a record I am proud of.......

I'm aware of the break on the part of the firefighters, and the deputy during Hurricane Katrina. But what was the third break?

Hey Charley K....

A swat operator in Nevada....... I hate to say that although I see him at SHOT almost every year I can not for the life of me remember the circumstances........ Old age and way too many inputs at SHOT....... Well, mostly old age ..........

Quite interesting. Three breaks of the BK3, and all from individuals in high-impact fields where equipment is tested and pushed far beyond what any of us would do with ours.

Watch your back, Busse, we're coming for your title.

Just re-read the old Dodge Omni Destruction thread and I have to say, the 3, despite breaking was still a formidable and usable beast. Never cared for the "look" of the notch, but it is extremely functional.

A Camillus made roll stamped one was in fact my first becker. But back then to me it was just another knife , I sold it

If I'm not mistaken........the break the BK 3 suffered against the omni was inevitable. Were they not using the notch as a lever against the nader pin? If so.......if enough force was applied.......there's no way the 3 could not have broke. Its a 3/4 inch piece of hardened steel attached directly to the frame against a 1/4 inch piece of hardened steel (with or without a notch). That's just physics.
