BK-5/15 with rat tail tang and stacked leather...Going to far?

Heyyy,

Ok, so I'm thinking of more ways to defile Becker knives and after thinking of getting a BK-5/15 and seeing that de handled, rat tailed Mora on my desk I though…What about a BK-5/15 with a Ka-Bar USN MK.1 handle? What do you all think? If I get a really (REALLY!) good response from you guys I’ll put it into action and make one but this is an extreme, crazy ass, old man standing in the middle of the street screaming project. Again, thanks to everyone that has checked out my other mediocre custom work and left me a polite line , really appriciate it. I'll stop talking as you all probably get the general idea now so yeah...Reckon its possible?

BTW, Even though I have talked about a 5 with this weird ass stacked leather it'll probably be done on a 15, the 5's handle is larger and I dont have that kinda patience.

Cheers,

Cam

How would rattailing work on a cut out tang? How far would you go down? I like the idea but I'm having trouble visualizing is all

The skeletonized handles are going to be an issue for this, and the only way around I can see is welding on a new tang after removing the old one. It worked for the BK14 when it was first thought up, and was in a similar location, so it might be a viable option, but even if it works, what is the benefit? Stacker leather is nice and all, but (and this is personal opinion rearing it's head here and not a criticism of your idea) I don't think it is nice enough to warrant the possible destruction of a decent knife. I am all for people doing what they want with their stuff, but aside from aesthetics, what are the benefits?

Ohhhh, crap, I forgot about the skeletonised tang...This is a desturbingly big issue...Am I drunk?!....Back to the lab...
B!TCH!...Guess I got to caught up with what I was gonna use as a guard.

None, This will be probably be a safe queen...

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see it done, if only for the sake of seeing it done. :D

sorry guys but this isnt happening, i appologise for getting ahead of myself...it just looked pretty damn cool when drawn out and i forgot about the skeletonized tang, i'm going back to my old rule of posting about something after its done. Btw, can this thread be deleted or blocked?

What's the problem with removing the skeletonized tang? Can't you just divide that once it's off and use that piece as the rat-tail?

No worries Cam....I was looking at my bk16 and a thought of putting a clip point on it sounded pretty damn cool , half a second later I remembered there was such a thing called a bk17...I wanted to punch myself in the face for being a moron...

This was with a BK-15 not an Eskabar though, I dont have any welding equipment anyway.

Don't beat yourself up man, it is always good to flex the brain muscle every now and then, even if you miss a key piece of information. Besides, later on down the road, who knows? You might find yourself having some of the equipment you need to make it happen with.

If it were me, and I had gotten derailed, I might consider cutting down a Kabar MK1 to the shape and dimensions of a BK15 or something, simply because it already has all the handle issues taken care of and all that remains is grinding the blade to shape. Same steel and same heat treat, and probably a very similar thickness as well.

now THAT ^ is FUNNY!!!

I sat go for it. It would be kinda simple to weld a piece in there, inside the skeletonized parts. If it is a safe queen, then there is no issues on strength.
