This is such a rare event that I just had post a comment on it.
I received a BK-5 ordered through Amazon today. On Saturday I was practicing unprotected ISUI (Internet Shopping Under the Influence) and kinda' sorta' by accident hit the Buy It Now button on Amazon (a VERY dangerous button, btw).
Before I knew it I had 'purchased' a BK-5. I panicked just a bit, was prepared to hit the cancel button but I calmed down and figured that what had happened was fate; clearly either God, Ethan Becker or Ka-Bar wanted me to own this knife.
Anyway, the eeeevil man driving the Big Brown Truck dropped the box off in my car port this afternoon. My wife dropped the box into my chair and asked accusingly "another knife?" I couldn't hide my shame. I grabbed the box and skulked away like a dog caught stealing the Sunday chicken.
Once in the Portal of Manly Pleasures I tore open the package to behold... well, a factory stock BK-5. What more is there to say?
Other than this sucker is sharp. I mean SHARP! I've come to expect good, but not great, edges on factory blades. Some gooder than others, some (many) less gooder. However, it is rare that I get a production fixed blade knife with a true shaving sharp edge. Very rare. With over 175 knives in my collection I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the factory blades that came truly shaving sharp. A Becker wasn't one of them - until now.
A quick visual check of the edge found it very evenly ground from choil to tip, and a quick thumbnail test showed it to be very even, with no flat spots. I figured what the heck, let's give it the shaving test. I was amazed when this thing cleanly sliced the hair from my arm. Whoever put the edge on this blade in Olean knew what he or she was doing. Good work!
Quick, grab the Barbasol!
