I have an old(is there any other kind?) Blackjack BK-5, with the convex edge. It's my favorite slicer in the kitchen, and does a great job on small trees in the woods. While I don't have tha Kabar version yet, it is on my short list of things to get when I go back to work. My question is one of performance. Is the flat grind as efficient as the convex for slicing and chopping? And, if not, who would be recommended to convex the edge on a Kabar model?

the new lighter model CAN chop, i just don't find it as efficient. the edge retention after two rounds of chopping a 3.5 inch season oak log was great, couldn't even tell i did anything to the knife.

slices quite well with factory edge even after that. go see the passaround thread for pictures/details.

as for convexing, if you were to simply strop the thing on sandpaper now and again, the edge would probably convex up. the very thing profile doesn't have a lot of mass to remove (or round) for various cheeky convexes like the old MC, but imho, you don't need that with the new one.
