BK-7 Handle

One of the many reasons I got the BK-7 was because the scales were removable and hollow. You know, to put some stuff in there.

Anyway, as I was looking at some pictures of other peoples knife scales that had kits added to them, I noticed that one of them had (what looked like to me) cut out the cross members. allowing more room for more or larger items.

My question is, would this weaken the scales enough to be a problem? I am not that hard on knives, but then I havent had to be, yet. I would like to cut them out of mine, but not at the expence of broken handles when I need it the most.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Neal

I have broken a scales by pounding on it (no modification to the grip), and it took a severe beating before it caved, and it broke in the hollow region. So yes it would be weaker, but even so, it is hard to imagine needing that level of durability in a grip.
