BK-7: Older Version?

I received a new BK-7 from a well established online dealer today and was really surprised when I opened up the box. The blade has a smooth coating. My first thought was that Ka-Bar must have gone back to the old coating, but then I noticed something else. The markings are stamped. I guess I got an older version that the dealer still had in stock. Is this common? I'm perfectly fine getting an older version of the knife. It just caught me by surprise.

Here's a picture. It's not the best, so I don't know if you can make out the smooth coating, but you should be able to see the stamped markings well enough.

Yep, that's the previous model. Roll stamped. Nice.

Okay, that's what I thought. I'm actually glad that I got an older version. I like the roll stamped markings.

Thanks.

That s the way my bk2 and bk5 came as well although i bought them from individuals....was very pleased as well.

I got a 7 probably six months ago and it had the new coating/markings and my. I would say that to get a stamped Becker brand new from a dealer would be rare at this point.

If it was a well established dealer, then my guess is that this one got "mis-shelved" somehow, possibly as a return, and during a recent inventory/cleanup was "found" and re-stocked in the correct shelving area.

It sounds like there aren't too many stamped versions left, so I'm willing to bet that you're right. I have a hard time believing that it's been that long since this dealer sold a BK-7.

Love that smooth coating. I would have left the coating on my Bk10 had it came like that... or not. I still prefer it over the rough textured coat.

Yeah, before I received the knife, I planned to remove the coating, but now I'm not sure. I like the smooth coating because it doesn't create drag when slicing. I also think it looks better, but that's just a personal preference.

I have to agree, my machaxe, 16, 17 have the rough and my older 9, 7, 5, 2 are smooth which I prefer greatly.

My machaxe gets gummed up way more than a smooth 9 doing the same chores and there has to be a drag factor.

Smooth is much better IMOP, I would hate to have the slicey 5 in pebble coat!
