BK-7 or BK-9???

Over the past couple of months I have been trying to decide whether I should get the 7 or the 9. When I got one, I would use it for simply battoning and possibly making traps. I just wanted to ask you guys your opinions on this, and maybe even give me some reasons on which is better. Thanks all, and I'm pretty new to the forums, so be nice. Thanks

Welcome to the Becker subforum stud, I'd say the BK9 is gonna be better for processing wood/battoning but the BK7 will do that pretty darn well as well as be easier to cut notches and whatnot for trap triggers. You probably will end up with both eventually. It depends on what other blades you have. I like the BK7 better but I'd still pick the BK9 as my "ONE" blade.

Eww. Tough call on this recommendation. I have both, and love both, and use both. The 9 will definetly out chop the 7, but the 7 is a better handler when it comes to carving. Both will baton and cut notches.

I'll say this, if you are going to be chopping, take the 9, if you will be doing more carving, take the 7.

Man, this is a tough one. :D

I'd say BK9. Both are great knives but the BK9 is much more fun to swing. The BK9 is heavier on the blade end which makes chopping a breeze. BK7 is a great knife too but I find the BK9 is much for fun to chop and swing around. Don't worry you'll get both eventually. The Beckerhead bug will get you...Either knife you choose you won't be disappointed. BK9 you may not need to chop down any trees but it'll be nice to have when you do :D

I had both and now only have the 9. I always found myself reaching for the 9 because that extra 2 inches was very useful to me, and the weight difference is small. Neither are going to be great at carving, etc, but you can always cary along a little neck or pocket knife too for the really delicate chores.

BK9, definitely. It just has so much more meat behind it, and it can also perform delicate tasks. I'm currently attempting to make a becker only spoon and knife from some wood I found. With the BK9 I was able to get it from a 2x4 to two basic shapes in about 45 minutes to an hour.

If it is a huge bit of indecision there, I would go with the 7. More all arounder than the 9, especially if you do not have a lot of experience with a bigger knife. If you are leaning really heavily towards a large chopper though, like everyone else has said, the 9 can't be beat. It is a great knife, and price wise you won't be paying that much more than the 7.

Let's just be honest though, eventually, you are going to want both. :D

Good luck, and post pics when you get it in, whichever you choose!

+1 for this -- but I'd vote for the 9 and the upcoming drop point tweener or a Kabar Navy Mk1 - that way you cover your chopping/batonning needs and have a great blade for fine work.

I found myself with the same problem after getting my BK2 and BK11. Since I was/am new to big fixed blades I took a small step up to the BK7. I know I'll get the BK9 in due time but wanted to get comfy 2" at a time. I was impressed by how light and nimble the BK7 is and when I can swing it move on a 9. Can't go wrong either way!

The '9 will outchop the '7, but the '7 is still a very capable chopper. Plus, it does really well with the finer work. If I could only use one...my vote goes for the '7
