Hey everybody

I'm new to the forum, from the UK, an avid camper and looking to buy myself a BK-7 from Ka-Bar. Only I've got a couple of questions and heard some rumors.

Firstly the Rumor on a few other fourms is that the sheath for the BK-7 from Ka-Bar is getting a revamp, maybe kydex. Is this true and if so is if worth waiting for it?

Secondly as you know the UK is a Wet environment, so i've read that 1095 CroVan doesn't particluarly like the wet and may get damaged or rust. I know 1095 need looking after, but is it really a problem in the wet? And would i be able to clean it with gun oil?

Thanks V

1. I don't think any of the chatter i have heard includes a new sheath for the BK7.

2. Carbon does rust if neglected. However, if you keep it oiled and minimize the amount of moisture the touches the bare metal is should hold up fine.

I´ve you take a littel bit of care the blade doen´t in sec...

Take a littel Bottel of oil from Sunflower ore Olives(?), i Use Ballistol its very popular by hunter, fisher, gunners, knife freaks like us...in germany... it´s a oil you can use for every thing...i´ve you´re dog/pet do harm take Ballistol...i´ve you wanna cocking in wood´s take Ballistol(because the taste is not every one´s tastet)..

Alternative, i´ve you cut a nice sausage don´t clean the blade with "soap or other cleaners" so the fat/oil protect the blade...

Or make a Patina on the blade/cutting edge, i like Tabsco/chilli dip at 40°c in 10-15min in the backing-oven...

Greats

Kay

If 1095 gets a little wet, it's not going to dissolve like it was immersed in acid. Just dry it off after you use it and you'll be fine.

I live back home in Scotland for several months of the year and it's even wetter there than the UK ...:p

If the knife is seeing regular use or you bother to actually oil it after use you will have no problems.
I have a few Beckers and use them in Scotland and Taiwan (both places are fairly nasty for steel) and I have pretty much no problems. I left a stripped BK9 stuck in a log for a couple of weeks in Taiwan and while it did rust up pretty good it took about 10-15 mins to buff it back to a nice satin finish

I like to give mine a wee rub with Mineral Oil (AKA Paraffin Oil) - that keeps the knife from rusting and because the oil is food safe you are fine to use the BK7 to cut food.

The 1095 CroVan is an excellent steel and will have no more problems with rust than any other carbon steel (like used by: Mora, cold steel, RAT Cutlery, Opinel, etc). I don't think it is particularly susceptible to rust, just clean it after use and rub some oil on now and then and it will last for decades.

Thank you very much everyone.
I've gone ahead and ordered the BK-7.

On another point do/does anyone travel with their survival knifes in their suitcase. I might be going to australia for a new job, where a knife like this will come in handy, do you think i can take it along?

As long as the knife is not double edged and is packed with camp gear etc. then you should have no trouble with Aussie customs. The chances are they won't even check any way.

Hey vnxc....

Thanks for buying a BK-7 ......Please let me know how you like it....

Phil Gibbs had Camillus coat the edges with vaseline and that worked very well....I use mineral oil on a lot of metal surfaces around the shop as well as on blades....I like both of them because they are taste and odor neutral....WD-40, I have found, leaves a nasty and lingering finish on the palate.....

Happy New Year and THANKS again...

All Best...

With minimal care you should have no problems, congrats on your purchase!I live on the Oregon coast and use mostly carbon steel fixed blades, in the woods, with no ill effects.

Is there anything to this?

it probably is worth mentioning that if one has a bushcrafty nature/intent, one probably has vaseline in their kit anyway (for fire starting)... so, keep extra... a little goes a long way... and just lube up the blade edge for long periods of non use, and wipe it off onto something to be used as tinder later :)

if it's REALLY nasty, one could carry some nail polish, even a color that would show, not clear, and paint exposed edges for periods of non use. as a bonus, it makes a great thread locked! plus, special extra bonus, a thread locker for frayed stuff. and more!

Hehe aussie customs can get very picky, i should know i'm australian! But i'm sure they'll be alright, otherwise i'll just buy another BK-7,9,2.

I would like to know that as well, i heard this from someone who owns a knife shop who called Ka-bar saying his customers kept asking if there was a kydex alturnative. They said a new kydex one was being designed/Made and would be coming soon????

I carn't wait for it to arrive:D, its a big investment hope to have for a lifetime.
