BK-9 decisions...

Howdy all, I have a BK-9 that resides in my truck as my "truck knife". It rarely gets used, but has done some chopping and is no longer cosmetically beautiful.
I have been doing some pondering about sending it out to get the blade coating sandblasted off, a full convex profile put on the blade, and the blade satin finished. The handles will stay on, and the coating will remain on under the handles. This will make the knife a significantly better performer, but will obviously decrease the value to those that worry about such things. I had my BK-5 altered by Mr. Fisk himself by having the edge convexed, so I guess it is no longer factory pristine either. (and NO, Guyon, you cannot have my BK-5!:p )

So, should I go ahead and have a screaming sharp cutting and chopping machine made, or should I keep it factory fresh?

Mongo, it doesn't sound from your description that it's "factory fresh" even now. ;)

Go for it!

After all the Beckers are "Knives that work for a living"!

It's meant to be used. One thing you might consider is shipping it to Justin at Ranger Knives to get some micarta slabs put on it. I'm thinking of doing the same with an older Blackjack Brute.

Check out Jerzee Devil, Soupmonger did a really nice mod to a BK10, I believe it was. Satin blade, wooden scales. I am either going to remove the coating on my BK7, or remove the coating and send it to somebody to put a new handle on it. If you're worried about resale value, I would just do the mod. Someone will buy it customized.

who does a full convex grind and satin finish for Beckers? how much would that cost? what about the micarta handles? how much more would that cost?

thanks....

I have been given figures ranging from 30 to 50 bucks. One was a handoff, and the other was through the mail. Different makers. Since you are outside CONUS, I don't know if it would be extra or not.

Go for it, the Beckers look a lot better stripped. These knives beg to be used. It's not like it is a Randall or a Lile and will be worth loads of cash. Put it to use.

Alrighty then! Soon as the $$ pile up to the required amount, off she will go. I'll even try to post some pics if I'm not too computer-retarded.

I own several Beckers, but only one with micarta handles.

Please forgive my ignorance (it's genuine) but what is so great about Micarta handles? I love the standard handles on my Beckers. They feel great and I've yet to have one break or even sustain significant damage. Is it just an esthetic preference, or will micarta actually out perform GV6H- if so how???

Nothing wrong with GV6H. But...

Hit your GV6H scales with a hammer. Then hit some micarta scales with a hammer. My money's on the micarta as far as least damage. The micarta can take more of a beating. Not an issue unless you'll be using the knife under the most extreme circumstances (digging, prying, batoning, zombie killing).

Plus micarta just feels better in hand to me.

So it's the toughness of the micarta that people are impressed with?

Ok. That makes sense.

All the micarta scales I'm familiar with have been flat. Is it possible to shape them for a more contoured grip???

I guess I have only put my Beckers up to tough use, but not yet extreme use. I was actually afraid that my Becker Extreme wouldn't stand up to extremities because the blade is SV30?

I'll give micarta scales another look. I still prefer the shape and feel of the GV6H handles, but even the slightest edge in Zombie Killing is worth a little extra!
