With not knowing just what is going to happen to BK&T and Camillus, I went ahead and ordered myself a BK77 Extreme (S30V steel). After putting in my order, I started wondering hmmm did I make a mistake in getting the Bk77.

Do any of you forumites own and have used the Bk&T Extreme and what kind of impressions do you have about it. I have quite a few BK&T knives and they all seem tough as tanks but I have never had a knife of S30V from BK&T and I don't know who does the heat treatment on them now.

So, I welcome any and all comments on your experiences....they may make me cry or smile but that's okay since I want to know the truth about them.

Thanks in advance!

S30V is a terrific steel, but I don't know if a big 7" blade is where you want to use it. The way I see it, good old carbon steel would probably be better for a hard use outdoors knife.

Then there's the price, you can get four regular Beckers for a bit less than what the BK77 costs!

This is just my opinion, but I don't see any significant advantages in the BK77 (other than the nice shiny blade, I hate coated blades) over the regular Beckers, at least not the kind of advantages that would justify paying over two hundred bucks.

I have to agree, from what I have read S30V has good edge retention but is prone to chipping which is not what you want on a heavy chopper. And that price!!!!!!!
You could do with input from an expert"Cliff where are you?"

there is an article about that particular knife in the current issue of "Tactical Knives" it gives a decent review

Thanks for the input from everyone. I am trying to make a deal where I won't be haveing to pay the full retail price which might soften up the pain some. I am still looking at just a little less the $300 but that's better the full boat $$$.

Thanks again,

For that amount of money you could buy a Busse in INFI (well almost). INFI is superior to S30V in my opinon when it comes to choppers and large knife chores.

Agree. I would pick INFI in a big blade over S30V any day and Busses have superior warranty just in case I need it.

These knives were designed/promoted during the height of
S30V's popularity. The main advantage is that it was in a fad steel and thus could sell on the steel. For the type of use those types of blades are designed for there is little value in wear resistance and it tends to be a negative because the toughness and grindability is lower, the steels are more expensive to buy and work with. So you pay a lot more and get a lot less.

I have a BK77 Extreme and it is the best "big" knife I own. I like the handling
qualities and overall, while somewhat expensive, it is a great knive.

300 hundred bucks is a ton of money for a knife with no real advantage over a BK9 for 70 bucks or less.
