Can you give us some characteristics of the 0170-6C metal used in the BK&T knives?

Also, where are the BK&T knives mnfr'd? (state, city).

Thanks,

William - welcome to the foums. 0170-6C is a carbon tool steel that is exclusive to Camillus Cutlery and is used primarily on the BK&T knives, though the Fisk OVB bowie and the Terzuola Black Ops CQB series have this steel. It is comparable to A2 tool steel in performance. 0170-6C is a tough steel, has a lot of bite and good edge holding characteristics. Because it is not a stainless steel, it resharpens easier than SS. Which is good if you are out in the field with a BK&T (hunting, camping, etc). BK&T knives are manufactured in Camillus, NY, along with the rest of the Camillus line. Hope this answers your questions!

Comparable to A2? Wow, I had no idea. It ought to be really good at holding an edge. I just got mine yesterday, and am already planning on how many more I can afford to buy as gifts to friends... What a great knife!

Mine was hair poppin' sharp right out of the box, and the grind marks at the edge strongly reminded me of another manufacturer that has sharp knives and similar grinds. ;)

Will wonders never cease?

Dexter,

Don't forget, Cold Steel's Carbon V knives are made of 0170-6C as well. (Since they are actually made by Camillus)

No, Blackjacks were made mostly of 52100 if my recollection is correct.

May have been some O-1 models as well.

A good deal of the old blackjacks were made from 0170-6, the extra C at the end of the steel camillus uses indicates that its just a hair different than the alloy used by blackjack. Blackjack also used A2, and (unfortunately)1095 during their later years.

The new "Blackjacks" are made by Marbles, I think, and are 52100 (or were, as the case may be with Marbles changing to their mystery steel).
My #1-7 Classic Hunter, though, is 0170-6 (great knife, and I have always loved the steel).
Still hoping to get one of those A2 Trailguides one of these days...

If I'm not mistaken (and don't ask Will to clarify here as Camillus has a policy of not discussing the details of knives they make for others), the 0170-6C used by Camillus in the BK&T and OVB Fisk Bowie is a bit more refined than the Carbon V formulation. I won't be more specific here about exactly what was tweaked, but I'm pretty darned confident that it is more of a "Carbon V +++" using your framework. And the comparision to A2 is pretty apt. 0170-6C is one of my favorite carbon steels!!!

Bob,

I'm not sure if the camillus stuff is more refined or the same... I don't really care, I don't buy Cold Steel, I buy Camillus!
Beckers rock!
