BK10 and Rust

So, I just pulled out my 10 to sharpen her up and what not and found that she has made some rust babies. I am guessing the sheath held more moisture than previously thought during my last hunting trip. Freezing rain and 40mph winds = bad environment for metal. But we already knew that. I will be cleaning her and posting some before and after pics.

Am I the first to rust the Special series BK10s? ha ha ha ha

Rust happens.

I pulled my 14 out of my Falcon II yesterday, and noticed a little on the edge. Need to clean it up.

Not the first, unfortunately. Mine was pretty rusty when I found her in the Jeep after being lost a couple weeks.

Mine sat on a shelf after I bought it for a couple of weeks, and when I went to pull it out to sharpen one boring day, she was covered in rusty fingerprints. They came off easily with a brass wire brush and some oil though.

I took mine kayaking down the Cumberland Big South Fork River, left it in the hold over night.

Big orange flaky rust. :D

Not the first, me thinks. But its good that you got some rust on it, I don't think a knife is broke in until you rust it once or twice.

You know, there is something to be said for that. My BK2 had never been put up wet or uncleaned since I got her. Since I convexed the edge, it is fairly polished there, so I was a little surprised after the last trip how rust had formed. I took a bic when and ran it down the edge though and the rust just fell off. Nothing for it to stick to I guess. It did patina parts of the edge though, which I thought interesting. Little bit of time on the strop polished that down though, so it has a nice user patina on the edge now to protect it more.

Really then, you need to rust your knife, in order to protect it later. Also to show it who is in charge. We all know these are vicious beasts, waiting for you to drop your guard. Feed them wood, and occasionally let them rust a bit and they should stay pretty tame though.

One must apply measures to ensure the blood thirsty little bastids know who's in charge. After my last BKT bite, I left it outside all night, alone in the dark. Next morning, when I opened the door, it came running in a curled up next to the fire, and went to sleep. Haven't had an issue after that, been one of the best pets I've ever owned.

Rust on a knife is like hair pulling during the horizontal mambo. Some don't like it, but if your going to be in my hands, it will happen.

Been too busy to clean my 10, yet. :)

If you are not doing food prep, something I do to keep the "oxide monsters" at bay is to apply a wax of some type to the blade. I have a bottle of Meguiars(sp) #20 Polymer based auto wax that have on my Camillus BK2 that is stripped and polished. It spent three days in the field stuck half in the ground after a Coyote hunt. I finally found where my buddy "left" it and brought it home for a good cleaning. The main issue was the sharpened edge and under the Micarta. There was no wax under the Micarta and it rusted to the point of mild pitting. The edge cleaned up with some stoning. Most any wax can give you some limited protection. P.

My 2 had some on it the other day where the paint had rubbed.
Scotch brite, mineral oil, back to the sheath.

My 10 hasn't had a chance to rust yet, but I'll work on that.

Right now, it's sitting between some grapefruit slices and very patiently waiting for me to finish up the new grips.
