BK10 Purpose?

Hey all,

I have a BK10 that was Camillus made. It is by far one of my favorite knives, but recently I got a BK9 for Christmas along with $50 to go towards a BK11. With these two knives at my side along with the BK13, I'm wondering... what do I do with my BK10? I won't sell it or trade it, but I hate to see it fall into obsolescence. Where do you see the BK10 fitting into a gear lineup? Hell, I've even been eyeing the BK7 to act as a shoulder strap mounted defense/first grab knife when hiking and backpacking.

Hey Sqoon...

I designed the BK-10 CREWMAN to replace the pilot survival knife......As nice a tool as the PS is it is not really very suited for fieldcrafty stuff due to its blade geometry and those really stupid saw teeth.......If you work in a copter or armored vehicle, plane or humvee and you gotta get in and out of it all day long and maybe in a real hurry in indian country what you have hanging on you has gotta be real useful.......My favorite combo at the moment is a BK-11 NECKER and a BK-10 COMBAT BOWIE but if I was getting in and out of a vehicle or aircraft a lot me betch'um I would trade the COMBAT BOWIE for a CREWMAN in a very skinny heartbeat.....

How about hanging the CREWMAN from that pack strap???.....But then where would the BK-7 go?????

All Best....

I guess I could do the BK10 on the strap, put the BK7 on my thigh, the BK 9 on the back of the pack and the Necker... well, I wanted to put a tek-lok on the necker and have it mounted horizontally on my belt. Will the KA-BAR clip mount horizontally? Either way, that is a hell of a lot of weight and even more Becker. But is that a bad thing?

Also, you seem to be referring to the BK10 CREWMAN and the COMBAT BOWIE as two separate knives. Did I miss something? or did you mean that your combo was the BK7 COMBAT BOWIE along with the NECKER?

Hey Sqoon.....

The BK- 9 is the COMBAT BOWIE and the BK-7 is the COMBAT UTILITY....The BK-10 is the CREWMAN......Easy to mix up if you don't own the company.....lol....

Or you can just send the BK10 over... :p
I'll find a couple of uses for it. lol.

Honestly now, I'd love to own a Crewman BK10. It's a great compromise between size, weight and utility power.

Agreed, but where does it fit in? It's too big to fill the role of the necker, and too small to fill the role of the BK9. That's what I'm struggling with. Perhaps I just need to resolve the fact that it will not be a part of my outdoors carry system, but rather be a part of a Bug Out Bag, or car kit...

You can have my BK10 when I'm dead.

I have a friend at work who bought a BK10 after seeing my BK7. He swears it's the best deer knife he's ever owned because the blade length, tip, and edge are all "just right".

crewman "to cut stuff that the Combat Bowie" is too big for, and the Necker too small for :>

crewman as your backup knife... two is one, one is none.

crewman as a loaner at camp for someone to shave fire sticks while you split other stuff with the bowie. keep a SCARY SHARP concave edge on the Crewman, keep a more choppy edge on the bowie...

I hear ya. I also find myself taking a big chopper and a smaller FB or neck knife. Though for me, the BK10 is a great collectible!

I THINK the BK10 would be the best all around knife possible from the Becker line. Now please bear with me, as I am both a newbie to the forums, knife collecting, and the ranks of Becker enthusiasts.

That being said...I think this knife is 5or 6ish inches? With a clip/drop point? (Not sure on that nomenclature). Although I've never seen one or held one, that seems right in the ball park (lengthwise) of what most web sources claim as the best "survival" knife. Most claim 4-6 inches and full tang being major criteria. I'm all for the bigger knives. But without actually holding one, I can say the BK-10 (IF some of the resources I've read are right) would be my ultimate knife.

Stacey,

I think you are right on!

Like I said in another post about new products, the BK-10 is my go to knife for woods bummin'. With the exception of chopping, it does everything pretty darn well!

I can't wait for KaBar to start making one, so I don't have to worry about breaking mine when I abuse it :D

More and more, the Crew is becoming my long-distance dayhike blade. I don't use it for multi-day trail backpacking as I prefer a lighter blade, but it is just about ideal for longer duration dayhikes when doing some bushwacking.

It's a tweener that does just about everything well. Coupled with some OnScene high-riding kydex, it's versatile, a comfortable belt weight, and easy to deploy:

interesting trivia:

the BK-10 Crewman weighs 12.0 ounces

the BK-02 Campanion weighs 14.6 ounces

difference: 2.6 ounces - woo!

overall, i think the big love for me on the crewman is the thumb ramp and hammer pommel... the tip shape is well, you know, okay :)

for some reason, the military really seems to like those thumb ramps, they seem to pop up all over the place ^_^

but now that the BK-02 Campanion is getting more forward weight (via handle cutouts), and a bonus hammer pommel, well... heh :>

maybe they can put thumb ramps on a limited batch of BK-02s ;)

I'll stick with my super heavy BK-2, thanks. Old and frail as I am, I can handle the whopping 2.6 ounce difference. I would like to have one with the new pommel, though.
