Ordered micarta scales from Tomars, arrived in 3 days.

Purchased Rit brand brown liquid dye. Poured into small bowl and SALTED the dye.

Roughed up the micarta by hand with 60 grit sandpaper.

Now here's the interesting part IMO.

Dropped the micarta in the salted dye then covered with paper plate. I HEATED the salted dye and micarta for 30 seconds. I then took it out of the microwave and let sit for 8 hours.

After 8 hours I took the micarta out of the dye. It was black with a black crusty salt shell on it.

I washed the micarta in cold water and dried it. This is the result.

Worked great. I have no idea if the salt or microwave helped. Its just what I did and it worked for me.

Peace,
steve

I'll admit I was not going to click on this until I saw "salted" and "dye" in the same sentence.
Nice work!

I'm just curious, but why did you add salt and microwave them? Is that a process that is supposed to improve dying or create a unique finish?

I like that! I just got a set of these today from Tomars. I think I'll give it a try. I'm fairly certain we have some Rit dye here.
I'd like to hear about the rational for the heating and salting as well.

I saw somewhere in another thread (I think) someone salted the Rit dye. I didn't measure any salt out. I just salted like my fries needed just a little more salt.

Now the microwave idea.... doesn't heat help the salt penetrate food better or sopping BBQ with Italian dressing or whatever your sop is? That was my thinking.

If you try the Revenuer method (LOL) be advised. Microwave wattage varies, people like diff amounts of salt, etc etc. AND I'd of probably heated the dye longer but it was popping like hot grease!

Someone can try my next method:

Simmer the Rit over low heat on a stove till its warm. Add in salt or Tony Chacheries (spl?) or some Swamp Dust to the dye and micarta. Heat till just a little too hot for your finger.

Take off the heat and cool for however many hours you think it takes for the dye to penetrate. Remember I did 8 hours.

Good luck.
Peace,
Steve
