Howdy folks,

Trying to decide on my next purchase. I am currently looking at the BK11 and the BK24 D2 D'Eskabar. It will will take its place as one of my EDC go-to knives. Planned use is everything under the sun from opening letters, food prep, cutting the cardboard boxes for garbage day, and something lite out in the woods / carving. I plan on doing a little custom work to my end choice and I am just wondering the opinion of those who currently own one or the other (extra points for a owning both).

Cheers,

Tim

I was in the same boat as you and decided on the bk24... I think the edge retention for an edc is very important so that is why i went with the 24.... Not that the edge retention on the 1095cv is lacking. I haven't received it yet so I can't give you and real world feed back yet.

I own both. I have a BK11, two BK14s and a BK24.

I love all four of them.

But the 24 is probably my least favorite. I've never sharpened it, but it came the least sharpest of all four. The edge was a little bit less even than the others, which appeared to all be completely uniform. The BK24's edge isn't. I haven't noticed it having any effect on performance, though. The D2 does take some cool stains after a while too, which I like.

My BK11 I recently got, and I've been carrying it since. I really like how it feels in the hand, but I really like how the others feel too. I can't say if one is more comfortable than the other. They're both equally comfortable to my hand.

The fit and finish so to speak is a little better on my 14s and 11, but you won't be disappointed with the 24 either. I imagine the 24 is significantly harder for the manufacturer to machine and that's why the lines seem just a little bit less perfect than it's 1095 counterparts. I think you should get both! You'll be happier with both of them.

One advantage to the BK24 is that the scale sets are only $12 or so. The BK11 scales are 2.5x that, and with the 14/24 scales you get two sets (which I can assure you will encourage you to pick up another 24 or a 14 ;) )

I have a BK11, 1 BK14, 2 BK24s. I started with the 14 and it is my all time favorite knife. It has never failed me. I have used it for EVERYTHING requiring a knife. I do not use the 11 (with micarta scales) because I'm not too fond of the handle so officially it now belongs to the wife and I'm cool with that.

To re-enforce what Chalet said above: The 11, 14 and 24 are essentially the same knife, just a different handle on the 11, and a different steel on the 24. Performance differences are subjective, because performance with these blades is so closely related to personal preference/comfort that you may realize (after using them all at some point) that one cannot outshine the other.

So, having said that, if you don't like the way the knife feels in the hand you will limit its use because your preference is not with that particular knife.

I recommend the 14 with the Zytel scales to start. Strip the coating from blade, square the spine and you are good to go!! It is a winner and very very nice.

I think the BK11 with micarta is more comfortable than the 14/24 (with or without scales).

I gave my two 24's to the kids for Christmas, but otherwise would have all three still. I've started carrying the 14 on a neck lanyard under my office (short sleeve "dress" shirt) and on top of a white t-shirt. I really don't have a daily need for the bottle opener, so the 14/24 handle is just fine. I really do like the 24's with TKC G10 scales that I gave my kids, but if you are wanting to customize, I'll have to agree that going for the 14 with Zytel is a great way to start. Tom pretty much hit it on the head in his last sentence. Then, pick up the other two as time and money allow.

+1 for the bk14 w/ zytel scales. IMHO bk14/24's grip is more comfortable. I find 1095 easier to sharpen and maintain than the d2. But it should be said that I own all three and love them. In this order. Bk14, bk24, then bk11. Good luck, there is no wrong choice.

Thanks for the great advice!

I think I'll definitely have to go down to a store instead of ordering online to see how they feel in the hand. Funds permitting at the time, I may just have to buy them both!

Cheers,

Tim
