BK14 and BK15 Leather Scale Mod

I picked this up at the thrift store one day figuring I could do something with this thick sturdy leather one day. Then I got the BK14 and the idea struck me... Scales! So I did my 15 too...

I Jasco stripped then added some other leather I had to fill the dead space to add support to keep the scales from warping and pulling away from the edges from the screw tension.

I used an old Tupperware drawer liner for the liner. The liner and leather was cut oversized and epoxied and clamped. Holes were drilled, reamed, countersunk, etc for the hardware.

I used the spare hardware from a ZK. The threaded spacers had to be countersunk into the backside, the length worked out pretty good. The lanyard hole is lined with scrap chromed copper tubing. I'm not so crazy about it. If I do it over I'd skip the lanyard hole entirely. The 15 uses the stock screws with stainless nuts as I could not get my hands on the right screws in time.

I attached the slabs then all was then sliced, cut and sanded to shape all by hand with an old hickory paring knife, sand paper, and steel wool. I used a wooden spoon wrapped in 80 grit to shape the curves and palm swell on the 15.

I coated them in melted beeswax and used a hair dryer to heat the leather so it would soak in. I left the wax in the BK15 screw holes I guess to seal it. I see no reason to remove it, I kinda like it. The wax heats up in your hand and gets sticky but doesn't leave your hand sticky.

Overall I'm very satisfied with the result. Over time the wax migrates in even more and leaves a nice smooth finish that looks like something other than leather and feels nice in the hand.

I'll do a more complete process write up when the BK5 arrives, it will match the 15.
Thanks for looking!! I'm open to comments, suggestions, and critiques! :)

Nice work man. I don't believe I've seen that done here before.

sure ya have. It's just been awhile. ;-)
I think Psy inherited my odd leather scales.

Nice work, dude!
The 14 is particularly well done.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I've been trolling here a long time and for some reason the "discontinued beckers" thread made we want to sign up. I have to give a lot of credit to all the board members here for the ideas and tips I've picked up over the past couple of years. The 14 was my first mod a few weeks ago and the 15 quickly followed. Finally I have something to share.

That is brilliant, you lads never cease to amaze me. Well done man, leather - brilliant.

Thank you Sir E! I tried to stay true to the design of the tweener grip, it's is close.

cEdge- I do have 2 leather sheaths in the works for the 14,
one was going to be a pocket sheath put on hold and one for a piggy back for a BK5,
I'll post pics when i get home.

Thanks for the kind words Gassy and LG&M, thats very encouraging!

Suppose to get 5-12" of snow tonight so i'll have time on my hands tomorrow for knifey stuff lol..

What was the weight (thickness) of the leather used for this?

I Really like how these have turned out and I will likely be making a set for one of my Beckers.

Did you use any epoxy between the scales and the liners?

You did use vegetable tanned leather, right?

I did use epoxy and let it cure in a clamp. I scored both surfaces but I believe it can separate easily if tried. No idea what the weight belt was tanned with it was a thrift store 3.99 score. It's a good 1/4" thick so that's one solid piece on each side. I'm about to start a more detailed thread on the same for the BK5. I'll link to it from here soon.

Forgot to post these. Both for the bk14. The smaller one was going to be a pocket sheath but I've decided on another design, I'll prob still finish it eventually. The longer is intended to be a piggy back. Both have only gone as far as wet form and are now back burner'd. I soaked the leather in a bowl of hot water then used a vacuum sealer to form. I used an antler tip to get more detail pressed in. Then I put it in the freezer for a few hours, I figured it'd get it hardened so I could have my knife back. Then just let it air dry for a couple days. The taco one I clipped closed because it wanted to open up as it dried.

These are my second attempts at sheaths. First attempt was for a small old hick parer I put an antler handle on.
