BK14 and JAB Baconmaker blanks?

Hey guys, I acquired this BK14 and Baconmaker from an auction for a pretty reasonable price for both of them together. They were being sold as "blanks". Now, i figured that they would just be stripped of coatings, scales, sheath, etc. and not be true blanks but i can't tell for sure. The BK14 has some black residue on the handle which leads me to believe that it was just stripped but the thing is, neither one of these blades have an edge whatsoever and they don't look like they ever have; that goes especially for the 14. Regardless, i am looking forward to getting them nice and sharp and dressed to go out and play. I've already been eyeballing some of Tommythewho's wood for the 14 and JV3 is doing me a total solid and sending me his extra BK14 factory sheath at no charge since this one came with nothing. Wow, i just discovered the tip of the Baconmaker is magnetized! lol... i'm sure this is just a temporary thing but still pretty crazy to see a Baconmaker pick up (even if only for a second) a BK14 just by touching it. thanks for any input and suggestions regarding this new steel.

Did the baconmaker come with handles ? And how do you plan on using that thing. I think its a cool blade shape, just dont think id have any applications for it.

are you sure they've been heat-treated?
it will take you awhile to put the first edge on, be patient.

no, it didn't come with any handles, just the blade itself. I hear you, I don't know that i will be stabbing any pigs anytime soon. I have some friends that do go hunting for Boar so it may end up in their hands. It is as you said, a very cool and interesting shape. I definitely want to clean and sharpen it up a bit and see just how stabby it can be. It definitely seems like it is a good blade for what it is intended for.

Magnetized!?

Well...That can only mean one thing...
what's that?

It's my understanding that certain knife makers will use magnetized tables during certain steps of finishing the blade. Fine sanding and such. The blade will be magnetized after that. Then the blade has to be de-magnetized by an electronic de-magnetizer. I'm not sure exactly if this is what Ka-bar does or not, but I've heard about other makers doing it.

BTW...How do these blanks show up from time to time?

it's possible for a blade to become magnetized during grinding. It goes away after heat-treat, which is partly why I asked my earlier question.

Is there a way to tell if they have been heat treated? Ty for the info everyone.

i've been told over and over that there's officially no blanks for sale, resale, etc.

so, they might have slipped out... or walked out...

KaBar has a magical machine that eats steel and turns out granules. all seconds and junk go in there. recycled.

so, officially, they aren't blanks.

what are they? couldn't tell you...
