Just finished making a leather sheath for my BK14. Used veggie tanned cowhide sides to make it. I'll be using it to keep my 14 in my pocketit doesn't have a loop for a belt. I really like how it turned out, except I'm still having trouble backstitching. I seem to be piercing the thread and breaking it, which explains why there is an empty hole at the end of my stitch. Please give me your advice/critiques.

I would occasionally have a breaking problem with artificial sinew. When I finally used it all up I went to waxed hand stitching thread.
I don't remember ever breaking waxed thread. It looks much better too.

Nice job; looks comfy, not too bulky for in pocket carry. Maybe a squared bottom would have helped to keep the sheath upright?

What kind of needles are you using? If it's pointy it might explain breaking the thread? I use blunt "tapestry" needles.

After the holes are in, I use an old ice pick to make sure the holes are all even and smooth. Most of the time I ask my wife to do it while I'm stitching another. Get regular leather stitching needles and don't flex them as you're pulling it through. That'll break a needle quick.

I'll probably dull the needle down so it's not as sharp. I'm using waxed polyester thread. On another note, I'm getting tarnish on my edge from the leather I think. I'm keeping the blade oiled, but it still seems to be getting a tarnish. Any way to stop this? As much as I'd dislike it, I may order a custom kydex sheath. I like the natural look of leather, I don't want to go to a synthetic material for a sheath, but it may be the best choice at this point with all the problems I'm running into. If there's anything I can do to stop this tarnish affect let me know please.
