BK14 ramblings and fuzz sticks

I EDC my BK14 but it seems it's more suited for chopping and less delicate cutting. It'll shave hair, slice phonebook paper etc., yet struggles at opening mail and bags of dog food. I should stop trying to compare it to my Opinel and SAKs LOL! I decided to convex it using sandpaper but had a hard time developing an edge that wasn't super obtuse, I didn't use a mousepad, just paper over my bench strop. Got out the DMT guide with diamond stones and put a 25deg inclusive edge on it whitch works well with the rounder apex I achieved with the sandpaper. Did some fuzz sticks today (first time ever making them) and it seemed really easy with the Eskebar when compared to my RAT-1 in a side-by-side test. I think I'll keep EDC'ing the BK14 now that I've tweaked the edge profile. How do you guys/gals preffer the edge on your BK14/11?

Wow, really nice fuzzin there Groove. I have mine set at a 20 degree V set with my lansky.

Honestly you can stretch the question to include the BK16 FFG since it is the same thickness. All my knives get a convex, but the trick is getting enough material gone so that it isn't a real obtuse angle there. It takes some doing. I have recently incorporated the DMT Diafold Red/Green double sided sharpener to the mix to help with this. Determined that Gutsy had just a bit more material gone from his edge than I did, and thusly his edge was sharper for it. It cuts like a devil now, and I look forward to getting all my edges reworked to the same degree of sharpness.

It's getting better the more I work it with the sandpaper. Still feels a bit thick behind the edge, I held it at too high an angle when I first convexed it. A learning experience for sure.

I have never fuzzed sticks so purty......Those look like some artwork a friend of Susan's does!!!!......... Purtiness, purtiness....really cool....... I bet they will take a coal well.....Hell thatsa freaking twig bundle and tinder all rolled into one....LOl......

Ethan....

Damn bro, nice. Now did you do 12 1/2 degrees per side for a total of 25 degrees?

Beautiful. I doubt all of the "purtiness" can be attributed to the knife.
Edit: meaning user skill is probably a major factor.

Last time I saw something that looked like those fuzzies it was pinned to some dudes lapel. Simply awesome. I have been thinking of giving my bk2 and bk14 a convex, and will follow this thread to see how it all eventually turns out.

that was your first try at fuzz sticks?!? yeah, they definitely look like flowers. helluva job there. must be a helluva knife.

I got some foam backed sand paper yesterday and I am trying to convex my 14 also to try it out. Those fuzz sticks are awesome, if I screw up my edge I am sending it over to you for re-profiling :D

Got it, so 25 degrees per side for a total of 50 degrees.

Dang it, now you have me second guessing my angle. The DMT Aligner instructions state that position #5 (third from lowest angle) is 24deg, but I'm not sure if that's inclusive. I need a protractor. Does anyone here have experience using the DMT system? If I had it with me I'd check, but I'm at work.
