BK14 Scales: G10 vs. Zytel

All right so I got my new 14 recently (AWESOME blade). I did quick wrap on the handle with the cordage that came with it and it feels awesome in my hand. Even so, I wanted something a little bit beefier for the grip.

I had been looking at some G10 scales until I saw part of the discussion over here, so now I am posing the question:

G10 or Zytel scales for the BK14? Anyone used both on the 14 and have a recommendation?

The Zytel is much less expensive so there is an advantage there...but that G10 I was eyeing looked really sweet. Would appreciate any feedback!

Well, what I have seen any G10 grips are going to be bigger, so that would be the only other real difference besides cost that I can see. Not sure why but someone made it seem like the zytel cleaned up easier, and I don't know why because G10 doesn't absorb moisture like micarta does. So looks, cost, and size are really the variables you need to look at.

I was comparing the zytel to micarta with the "ease of cleaning" comment. Agree that G10 isn't much different than zytel.

I just got the 14 a couple of days ago and grabbed the Zytel scales to go along with it. So far they are excellent and have exceeded my expectations. They fit the hand nice and the blade really well.

I can't comment on the G10s other than I chose not to get them strictly because of price at this time. I very well may grab a set in the future but when I was buying the 14 and looking for scales, the Zytels made more sense due to cost.

I have both and I like the TKC G10 more. They are slightly thicker, more tapered, have better traction, and look better imo. Are they $25 better? Sure, but the zytel scales are a better value. If the price difference isn't an issue, then I would get the G10. If you are on a budget, then I would get the zytel. If I gave the G10 10 stars, I would give the zytel a 7. Can't go wrong with either.

I agree with CloudsRest. I have G10 from TKC, have had the Zytel in the past and definitely prefer the G10, but the G10 costs as much as the blade. Both are good.

Thanks for the feedback. My biggest hangup on the G10 is price because the ones I want are more expensive than my BK14 was. I could almost buy another BK14 and the Zytel handles for both for one set of G10 scales.

But the G10 looks so cool....

Anyone ever do hand-stippling on the Zytel? Will it take it all right?

The zytel is almost identical to the grivory so it will take stippling just fine.

Thanks, Derek. I know a guy here in town who has done some stippling on his polymer handguns. I think he would loan me the stuff I need or let me come use his shop.
