Bk14 Sharpening.....

Out of all my Beckers, by far, the hardest to get a good edge on is my 11 and 14. Don't know why.... I have a Work Sharp Knife and Tool Sharpener and several Diamond homes that I can put a quick, sharp edge on any knife....Except the 11/14. Anyone else have similar experiences? I need to get an old skool guided sharp kit.

I have problems with my csm 11. Sucker need 45 minutes or work to get an edge on it. The reg 11 seems ok freehanding on a stone and strop tho. I have a 14 enroute so ill have to get back to you on that one

I tell you what after thinking about it, your right I don't have any trouble with the large beckers at all. Maybe im changing the angle or something mid stroke and that's causing it to not get nearly as sharp. its alot easier to angle of center on the smaller bevel. Hell even the beast bk2 is much easier with that large v grind

Last night was the first time I tried sharpening my Bk14, because I just recently got out with it and did some whittling and all that and I figured I'd try to sharpen it up. Well, I had a hard time putting a good edge on my aswell. I'm no pro, nor am I probably even average at sharpening, but I know I'm going to have to find someone to sharpen it for me because I definately can't. I don't even have faith in myself to go buy a Spyderco Sharpmaker.

30 minutes in which direction? And I might be an idiot, but what's a paper wheel?

I recently got my '2 to shave hair, but I can't do it with the 14.

That's odd that you can get the 2 that sharp and are having problems with the 14..

If I was close to Richard I'd be spending some quality time with him, bring him dinner, clean his house... you know that sorta thing...

you haven't seen sharp until you've seen Richard sharp !!!!

ctanner, take that 'hair shaving' sharp knife you have and see if it will push cut newspaper and have your hand about a foot away from where you intend to cut, i'l bet you big money it wont do it... :D

Richards sharp otoh will, push cut toilet paper you say??? done..

get a hold of him, or else :D... good luck...

All Hail Commie-Cat!

I looked up the BK-14 stats page and looked at the edge angle...adjusted, and Sharp!

I sharpen with stones so I didn't know the exact angle, but when OP said he sharpened with a guide I figured the angle was off.

ouch that hurt....
does he win something when he reaches 100?? :)

he gets to reapply for a BH10? :)

really

j/k :>

if you look at the overall list of angles, there's a big difference overall in some models... factory edge specs:

BK00 ?? (Reinhardt)
BK01 ??
BK02 20
BK03 15 (chisel)
BK04 varies (nearly convex to Camillus; some were horrible)
BK05 20 - really? feels thinner than that
BK06 20
BK07 20
BK09 20
BK10 20
BK11 15
BK12 40º inclusive edge, 8º bevel (assuming 20 and 4)
BK13 15
BK14 15

i took a BK14 to 19 degrees iirc, and it's nifty sharp, but i wouldn't do a lot of heavy work with it...

never found official numbers on the literature for BK"00" and BK01, or Machax, all of which varied a bit depending on era. the Brute was pretty thick, so maybe 12? 10?

I don't use a guide. Even on my Work Sharp, the only knife I use the guide on that with is the BK2.

Bumping this to see if there are any other replies as I'm still not getting it as sharp as I'd like it.

Thanks.

I have the same problem with my bk11; it is no where near sharp enough, but no problems sharpening the bk9....

I'll probably try the convex route for the bk11 as well!

Thanks QT!
