I have finished modding my bk11 and i have a bk14 on the way i just dont have it here to test with yet. i want to make my bk14 more into a fishing survival knife. I just have a few questions. has anybody tried this? My main concern is wrapping the hooks so they dont get stuck in the paracord or scratch the coating up real bad on the knife. I have seen people add hooks into paracord bracelets, how is this done?

im thinking under the paracord wrap will be snare wire and braided fishing line. or i could run it inside of gutted cord. on the handles edges maybe ill add a ferro and a magnesium toggle rod on each side of the edge of the handle and have some fishing hooks wrapped inside and connecting to the pinky ring circle hole.Fishing line without hooks is kind of pointless.

There are bk11 survival kits on the bay for 125 bucks but thats crazy, and they use a pouch and tin on the sheath, and i dont want to do that for neck carry. plus with all the stuff dangling it doesnt appeal to me. I think this can be done without the bulk package. i might not have every item they sell in the kits but for the most part fishing line/hooks snare wire and fire will get me thru quite a lot.

Anybody tried this? Anybody added hooks to bracelets or any other paracord thingy? how do you keep it from getting stuck in the paracord? Best hooks to use that wont rust?

Thanks in advance. and pics will definetly be up once i receive it and its finished.

Can you add all that stuff and still have a funtioning knife?
Are you dead set against an altoids tin?
They fit well in a pocket or pack.
I like wearing my BK11 necker style while fishing. It comes in very handy.
I think having a small fishing kit is a good idea.
I just think having it in a tin would be easier all around.

Yea i think i can add it all and it still function properly. My 11 still works wonderfully but I might need to keep the magnesium rod off the 14 for comfort but the fishing kit should not change anything since it will be under the wrap.

Im not against the altoid tin at all, or the pouch, i want both. but just not connected to the sheath. i prefer neck carry as well and the pouch would be bulky. i could have the tin seperate, but in that case i could just bring a small tackle box everywhere too. I would never use this fishing kit in normal situations, just as a backup for survival situations. I like light simple and functional. i always keep a knife, and that knife having extra gear is a plus when and if its ever needed.

I have seperate BOB, tackle, and survival gear for if and when TSHTF, but if we dont know until too late we might not have our gear or bob present. but i dont leave the house without a knife, this way im a little more prepared. And really i just like the idea lmao

I gotcha.
Have you thought of keeping the hooks in the small plastic bag they come in.
You might be able to wrap them along the flat part of the scale.
And probably have a good option for different sized hooks.
Then maybe a few split shot weights in the hole section.

Good idea, i can try on the flat edge and have the baggie wrapped around the edge but i wouldnt want the hooks being able to stick out. if it doesnt work i can try and keep the hooks in the small bag and wrap them completley inside the middle of the handle in the paracord wrap. i would have to work out a way to wrap the handle to conceal the bag though.

Oh and the weights, i had planned to have a couple slip weights acting like beads on the cord used for the necklace on the sheath, but will try out incorporating some splits as well to see which i prefer.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Could a ranger band cover the hooks?
Then a tight wrap job.
Good idea with the slip weights.
Now I'm anxious to see how this turns out for you.

Yes a ranger band could probably solve the problem of the hooks coming thru, I could just cover the handle and do a tight wrap. good idea! Thanks

Im anxious too, i finish one project then cant wait to start another. I will keep you updated!

Seems like you could add the hooks to the sheath under a wrap or ranger band, rather than the knife handle itself. wrap the line in the handle, or around the sheath. You could keep it totally flat and not add any bulk to it.

Thanks! i didnt think of that since My bk11 its custom painted so i try not to cover up the prettiness of it but with the bk14 that wouldnt be an issue. i didnt want the bulk of a pouch but for some reason never thought of wrapping the hooks on the sheath. This would pretty much end any problems with the handle so thank you.

I think i could set up about 4 pre made lines with hooks already attached plus a small pack of sorted size hooks and secured them with a ranger band and then still paracord wrap it for looks. I think i will also wrap the handle with extra fishing line and snare wire. Add the ferro rod and im finished!

Sounds like that should work out quite well. Glad to help. Post pics when it's done. I'm curious to see how it turns out. Maybe I'll do something similar.

Will post pics when finished! I just have to wait for the 14, i got it and a bk16 on a trade with the moose man. it should be here end of the week or maybe beginning of next week. soon as its here ill get at it.

Man thats a heck of a good idea for a project! I too am a project hound and i think i mite have to add this one to my list. Thanks for the info and i cant wait to see how this one turns out for ya. And if you come up with some more good ideas please post them cuz i know im interested!

I am not sure if this will help you at all. How about useing the firestraw idea and some ranger bands on your sheath to keep the profile low. You can put the Gulp! maggots, a hank of braided line, small hooks and sinkers are anything else seperatly in the straws then hold them in place with the bands. I plan on doing this with the Gulp! maggots in a kit for my Jeep for next summer.

Just a thought,

Jeremy

Well its been a while but i will bring this back up. so here is what i did. i put 6 or 7 assorrted sized hooks that i wrapped flat and tight in a piece of paper, a few fake worms, and a bunch of fishing line ,then i took a small emergency ferro rod and wrapped everything down to the sheath with snare wire. then i took some bicycle tube and pulled and yanked for an hour until it split apart and i had to start over. really i could use a bigger sized tube but this is all i had to work with. but finally i got it yanked over the sheath with all the accessories down under the tube wrapped down with fishing line and snare wire.

So its all in there and this is another project, a very easy one, finally finished by worldwood :) thanks for watching.

Have you tested the kit yet? Would be cool if you caught some fish on it. What sort of fishing do you have in your area?

Havent tested it per say, but i have caught quite a few fish on home made fishing poles. this is just for an emergency situation really and its too much of a pain getting the ranger band over everything with the size i have to do too much wrapping and un wrapping.
