I thought I'd give it a go making some Rosewood scales for the BK14. I have one side just about right (basic shape) with the exception of the front. All I have is basic wood working tools and a drill press so you'll have to give me some time on this one.

Any tips on attaching them to the knife are most welcome. I thought about using the same method as on an Izula with the Kydex insert, threaded rod and screws?

I like, going to nice when done. I just used SS screws and nuts. Not the sickest look but it works.

This makes me want to develop some scales. I think I have the tools. I say "think" because I really haven't looked through all my sh-tuff. I was going through my deceased father in law's tool box and found a checkering file. This was a few weeks after I had been doing some research on jimping and discovered the huge cost of checkering files, and I had given up on the notion.

Rosewood. Nice.
Basic woodworking tools and a drill press is a step ahead of me!
I'd make a small wooden insert to seat in the skeletonized area.
I used sexbolts, though I prefer the standard hardware, but in stainless.

Corbys are fun too, though.

I managed to get the scales to within 1/32" + - to matching the profile (tang?) of the knife today and a little shape to the front. Took a trip to the local hardware store and picked up an assortment of 6-32 stainless steel hardware. I took some 1/4" brass rod, drilled and taped it 6-32 and made a Kydex insert for the skeleton area from a radio control car front bumper. Not sure if that's what I will use but got the parts ready.

I do like the idea of attaching a thin piece of wood vice the Kydex, thanks for the tip tjswarbrick!

I'll have to go ahead and drill for the hardware before I go further. It's going so good I don't want to mess up by removing to much wood to get the scales to match.

Looking real good. What about hex head screws and threaded inserts - you could hide them inside the scale if it's thick enough or put them through the outside, but either way the scales would be removable with no but to lose....

Those look really great. You're well on your way.
I just want to see how they turn out in the end.

Well, I got em done but not real happy with them. The countersinks are not all that great with the old bit I had (ordered a new one) so the next pair will be better and have more shape to them. They feel good in the hand being a bit fatter than the stock black/orange scales. I have more wood scales in Zebrawood,Purpleheart, Bubinga, and some other types.

Thanks for looking!

I'll bet those work great for bushcraft. Lots of meat on the handles to hang on to. Well done. I think you did a good job on the screws, too.

I'd say they will work just fine. Good effort with just basic tools; although I like to think that projects like this are a good excuse to buy a new tool! Right now I'd like a reciprocating table sander....

Those turned out really nice.
Sometimes I wish I hadn't 3D shaped my BK24 scales. They felt great, and really filled the hand, when they were slab-sided with just a little rounding of the corners.

i think they came out great. thanks for sharing. i have been saying i need to try my hand at making a set for a while now.. but just haven't done it.. guess its time to 5hi7 or get off the pot.
