I was never really happy with the way these turned out on the first go with regards to the hardware setup and the area near the choil. I used the stock scales as a pattern and they came out "correct" but after doing the same mod on the BK5 I really wanted a better match...

The original mod thread is here for those who missed it:

Using the same process, I modeled the new scales after the large BK design. Now they really look like a pair!

The one hurdle in this design was the hardware. If I wanted them to match I had no choice but to drill the stock holes to accept the threaded post. That was tough. The knife actually took metal from the bit! After several attempts and a long slow process I finally got'er done. Glad I have my little drill press or there's no way I could have done this.

This time I'm satisfied with the results. I just waxed it today. There's still some smoothing and rubbing to do. I'll let it set in for a few days then rub off the excess and she'll be complete!

Thanks for looking!

Wow brother that looks fantastic! I'll bet they are REALLY comfortable in hand.
Thanks for sharing! :D

Awesome work. I have been toiling over how I want to complete my scales... although I am working on a BK7 and 9.

Thanks guys! Really appreciate it!
The only other thing I did besides the leather on the 5 is a little file action on my 9. And liners for the whole family. Easy and fun. Instant results too. Still trying to find that drill bit for the lanyard hole, its around here somewhere...

I like the look of those scales. Nice job (on the leather scales too). How does it feel in hand? Any hot spots or discomfort from heavy use or chopping? I have a couple extra grivory scales and am thinking I may try and duplicate your work.

Thanks Spameater!

I can't say I've gone all day but for moderate use so far no problems at all. I've done plenty of chopping and my hands are pretty rough anyway but I don't foresee any hot spots. It's all rounded off as well and sanded with 80 grit. I posted more about it somewhere if I can find it.

I can't find it so it goes something like this...

Just measured and marked then used the small file to start and bigger to finish. I attempted to make it look like teeth with fangs on the ends, sorta does. At first glance it just looks like tactical or something. I painted the grooves white but it looked stupid so I sanded it all out, you can still see remnants in the pics although it doesn't really show in person.
Pretty easy and fun project. Let us know how it goes for ya!

Thanks NCSlice. Looks like I will be adding a little (or a lot) of grivory dust to the saw dust that has accumulated in my apartment from reforming and finishing the handles on my Tramontinas. I think I will try this for the 2.
