BK15 vs coconut... who will prevail?

Ok so this is just a quick photo dump that i think some of you guys (and gals) will enjoy. Whether it be due to my lack of coconut knowledge or due to the becker content, I'm fine with either.

So to preface this, I have never attempted to open a coconut before, so this was a first for me. But having a becker in hand made me want to see if i could do it in a better way.

Ive been doing some work on the BK15 so i wanted to take a few shots of that while i was at it. I need to get some better pics of the end result once i have some time.

I added green liners too

I figured it was a good idea to try and carve off the top of the coconut that way i could easily pour the joice out. How hard could it be? It turns out that coconuts are pretty friggin hard! While I'm confinent that with a good swing i could have gotten in with my BK4, i wasn't doing that in my kitchen, and that would also send the juice everywhere! haha

I ended up reverting to the old standard of poking out one of the holes with a screwdriver to drain the juice

knowing i that it would be a complete pain to carve any of the shell, I simply reverted to the way its known for being opened and cracking it along the precut spot with the spine of the bk15. I hate that i ended up using a precut spot to open it - i may have to get another and use the bk4 in a place i don't mind making a bit of a mess :D

it didn't crack the whole way through so i ended up finishing off the split

I will say i do find it rather entertaining that the Becker obsession has actually led me to photograph and post the entire process of opening a coconut hahaha

Great effort! the 15 is an awesome knife, but not so much a chopper. Your 4 would of definitely worked better. Straight off a tree is also easier then the already hardened store ones.

I bet the 15 was put to great use scraping out the insides ;)

I like the look of the dark patina with sanded off swedge. Did you square the spine a little? looks good!

Thanks! yea i didn't even attempt to use it as a chopper - too many other beakers near by that would have done far better for that, i wanted to see if it could be carved.

As for the knife mods - i sanded down the swedge in order to both get a unique appearance but primarily to clean up the spine to be ground and squared - throws sparks like crazy with a ferro rod now. I'm letting it built its own natural patina through use, I haven't tried to add my own. I also sanded and smoothed the coating on the bottom half of the blade to improve its cutting abilities without sacrificing rust proofing. Once i added the scale liners it was perfect in hand. (gen 1 xbox case)

I eventually plan on stripping the whole blade (maybe handle too haven't decided) once the coating wears off on its own, i don't think ill strip it yet.

My wife is very patient too. A few days ago I came home to find my sourdough starter overflowing all over the kitchen counter. I asked her why she didn't call/text and let me know I had problem developing. Her answer was, "all your projects are messy...........I didn't think anything was wrong." I know that was a BS answer, but technically she was right. :D

Nice attempt...and it is funny how things you wouldn't normally take pictures of suddenly become interesting thread ideas....

Actually, you were on the right track for getting it open with the 15....just hold the thing in your hand with the eyes up, and chop away in a small circle (essentially "girdling" the top 1" or so) around the top (just under the eyes; keep turning the coconut). Eventually the top will crack (at which point just pop it off) and you can pour some rum in and stick a straw in it ;).
Thanks for the photos!

5 and 15 better suited to watermelons and cantaloupe........next time smack it with the 4 and she'll give up the goods!

that is the plan for the next one i get, i didn't want to break out the 4 in the kitchen though, too much coconut water going everywhere with a good swing haha
