Total newb here and just bought a BK16 and an Esee Zancudo.

Any recommendations for care? I know the BK16 has the carbon and can rust easily, but it comes with the thick black coating.

Thanks in advance.

If it is going to see food prep, strip the coating on the blade and use mineral oil or chapstick.

Chapstick will also work as a protectant and comes in an easy to carry container. Get carmex or something in a little tin to keep it from becoming a mess in the summer heat.

Plus, once you are done with that, you can use the container for a tinder storage box.

I use olive oil on all of my rust-prone blades. It smells good and works perfectly.

The only issue I take with olive oil is that it can go rancid if left without usage and replacement.

Hi ,I have a similar problem with an old knife I have just aquired.its a very old SAYNOR prunner.i have some pitting on the blade and would like to know if anyone can tell me the best way to get the rust out of the pits so I can stop them getting any worse?.

Valid point. I don't let my knives sit long enough to let it go rancid. lol. Seriously, I just refresh the coat every now and again. Every month or so. I have not had it go rancid yet. It also smells a helluva lot better than 3in1.

How deep is the pitting? Could you get some sandpaper and a solid sanding block and refinish the knife? If they aren't deep, that would be the route I would take.

If they are deep, then shy of a dremel and a Really small bit/buffer on a slow speed with some coarse compound, I am not sure.

Your best bet would be to head over to a photo hosting site like imgur or photobucket and upload some photos on there. Create a thread in here so you will have peoples attention that have actual experience with matters like yours.

Sorry for the derail Nuck, Good luck and welcome aboard to the both of you.
