bk16 cross draw

Hey folks,

I've been putting serious thought into upgrading my stock bk16 sheath to kydex and carrying it cross draw style on my weak side. My hope is that this will keep a slim profile and keep it from bouncing on my hip/leg. I'm only talking about bumming in the woods, not anything like edc.

Has anyone carried a 16 like this enough to form an opinion? Is it easy to draw and sheath? Does it stay out of the way? Does it feel comfortable? Any down sides to this style carry with this size blade?

Thanks!

Go scout carry on the lower back. That's how I roll. Solves all of the issues you mentioned. Very low pro, and very comfortable. The 16 is a great size for scout carry.

I'm thinking about the same exact set up as you, except with the BK-17. I was looking at different setups and really liked this one:

Obviously, that's an Izula, but I think the BK-17 could easily and comfortably be carried around the woods like that with a Kydex Sheath and a Tek Lok.

Thanks to all who replied.

Calm, the pic you posted is what I imagined for my 16 and I. I wanted to check if was missing something like comfort when seated or hiking around.

Sorry I'm late to the party.

I carry cross draw with my ZT 0121. Same blade length as the 16. Its really comfortable, and really easy to get to.

I also carry my BK11 the same way with a custom sheath from http://www.coyleoutdoors.com/

I prefer this type of carry for my shorter fixed blades. Anything 5 inches or longer I like to dangle

Silver,

From what I've read on Google and random reviews on different forums, that set up seems really comfortable and hardly gets in the way of anything. I'm thinking of getting on my left side because I'm right handed and it would make driving easier. The sheath would have room on the left side instead of bumping into the right side of the driver's seat.

TBL,

That's exactly how I want to carry mine. And I'm getting my BK-17 from http://www.coyleoutdoors.com/ in a few days as well. It should be arriving by this Friday. When I get some extra "playing" cash, I'm also going to splurge on a custom kydex sheath from him. Make it a cross draw carry. He does amazing work, is incredibly friendly, and is amazingly professional and fair. Every time I see his work posted on here, I gain more and more respect for his craftsmanship.

And that BK11 setup is ideal! I've been looking at a smaller fixed blade EDC for awhile, and that sheath and knife combo is a dream come true. I think my mind has been made up. :D

Thanks guys, good information. The pics are a help. Calm, sounds like you did your homework.

What are your thoughts on the best way to get kydex onto a belt? Teklok? Something else? I've never used a teklok before, but hear about them all the time.

For overall ease of use and adjustments, it seems like the Tek Lok would be the way to go. I've personally never used one, only ready dozens of reviews raving about them. Also, my brother-in-law uses one and loves it. So, I'm 99% sure I'm going that route. Plus, they aren't all that expensive anyway.

I have seen some para-cord lashings onto the belt, which I'm sure are as study as the Tek Lok, I just believe the TL would be easier to remove if the need arises.

I've also seen some leather lashings. Where the leather is wrapped around the Kydex and attached with loops to your belt. Its both beautiful and effective, but also a little bit more money and upkeep with the leather.

I think I would just go with the Tek Lok. Short of bashing that thing with a hammer, it will stay on your belt and you can get it wet and dirty all you want without worrying. Wipe it off with a towel and you're good to go.

Have you ever thought of leather? Here is a sheath I made not too long ago. This set up works pretty well for daily carry.

Nice pic, that really does lay flat. Is it OK when you sit?

I've seen some really nice leather stuff like yours, but I've been wanting to give kydex a try since I never have. I also like the idea of being able to adjust something like a teklok to go from cross draw to scout carry or maybe even vertical.

I carry my BK16 (and most of my Beckers, come to think of it) cross draw on my weak side. It's comfortable, low-profile and convenient.

I wear mine in a crossdraw setup in kydex with a survival pouch on the outside when bumming around the woods.

Crossdraw is fantastic IMO. Never could get with the scout carry for it though, not with the types of sheaths I make for mine. Maybe a deep pouch style sheath would work. All in all, I say go for it.

Yes, it will lie flat sitting or standing. You got me with the cross draw but it can convert from horizontal carry to vertical to dangler. Until I get some kydex Ill be sticking with leather. Good luck with your search

Cross draw makes a lot of sense, especially if horizontal as a cant, with anything but the shortest knives, has a tendency to catch on things.

Nice leather work included in this thread, BTW.
