BK16 is one tough knife

Hello My Becker Friends,

I was batoning some wood this evening, and decided to put my BK16 to the test. I found a twisted piece of very hard dogwood, and after batoning way too hard to get knife about 3" in, I was horrified to see the blade quite bent. I was heart broken!!!

I used a wedge of wood to baton the log open, and too my delight, the knife sprung back perfectly. It is straight as an arrow!!! I am sorry I have no pictures, wasn't thinking straight.

Lessons:

The BK16 is a great knife;
Wood wedges work really well;
Don't order a replacement knife until you are sure the bent knife is really bent; and
If you think you are overdoing the batoning, you are!!!

Becker's 1095 crovan is great!

Auch... this thread hurts my eyes.
Good to hear no Beckers are hurt taking these pics.

Ouch indeed!
Though I would never endeavor such with any of my knives, let along a beloved Tweener such as the Sweet 16, it is nonetheless comforting to see what yours have suffered, survived and revived. Thank you for sharing!

In fact, now that I have the benefit of your post, I have more confidence than I already had in my Tweeners the next time I encounter a particularly hearty hank of pepperoni or aged Italian sausage.

Regardless of whether you call it 1095 CroVan, 0170-6, Carbon V, or whatever, it's some tough stuff, especially so (imo) for an older alloy with a homogeneous heat-treat.

I prefer to split wood with an axe or tomahawk, tho. Yup, I'm lazy....

That's a "flex", not a "bend". I sold a 6 that I bought in bent condition. But, being as it is just steel, I put it in the bench vise and bent it back mostly straight. I was really scared it would break, because you must bend it back farther than straight for it to stay straight on its own. I mean I had to TORQUE that sucker, gently! It went back for me, and I didn't get hurt, a feature I always like. I have had some regrets about selling it, and I know the buyer resold it later, but ... c'est la vie.

All good advice! The 16 is a great general purpose blade. And yes, sometimes a splitting axe is more appropriate – especially in very hard wood with knots!;)

Or burn as is :D I like seeing that Beckers can bounce back from that kind of abuse as long as its not my knife :p
