BK16 mod gone bad (aka how NOT to mod a Becker)

I know better than to start certain tasks when I'm overtired....I really do. The reason I know better is that I have done it waaaaay too often; unfortunately, I haven't fully learned my lesson. Knife modifications that involve grinding are a very good example; especially since I've already admitted that I'm a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of guy. Taking a file and belt sander to a perfectly good knife - after working all night...and without a clear plan (or mental image of the outcome) - was how this started.

(yes - those are different backgrounds)

That isn't quite what I had in mind when I started; nor is it necessarily where I'm going to leave it. I've got two ideas that I think will work...I'm going to make myself look at it for a few more days before I touch it again, though.

I don't know - I kind of like the profile on that. It is definitely unique and not sure I've seen anything like it done before (at least in the short time I've been on here).

Depending on the legality of it where you live, what if you ground the spine near the tip into an edge?

Learn from this...all is not lost. There is still plenty of blade remaining for a functional knife. As spydercobenchmadekai stated: "You could make an awesome wharnie out of that!"

With some smoothing of the corners or creative thinking I'm sure you can get something unique and useful out of that.
Just sketch it up first, and draw or inscribe it on the blade so you know what you're shooting for - instead of just watching sparks fly.

I do hope this isn't a continuation of the beautiful spearpoint 16 you posted a few days ago...

Yeah...i m not too worried about this...you gonna get some rest and once again, blow our minds few days later...

Haha....... I see your concerns but I really wouldn't worry to much since there is still plenty of metal left to make an awesome unique blade. (And the more I look at it as is, the more I kinda like how it looks now)

Sometimes the greatest designs are made from mistakes since you are now limited to what you have left and are now forced to create from that.

It will be fine. Just take your time. And I vote for a wharnie as well! I have been wanting to make one of those ever since I started modding that pile of 16's I have.

Good luck and keep us updated on the progress!

So this is the challenge of a "design opportunity".....maybe a reverse tanto?

With the shape the way it currently is ... I agree with GSOM. A reverse tanto style kinda like a Benchmade 550.

I need to learn how to resize images...

I have that Benchmade. I really love the shape of that blade and have been trying to design a tweener size version. No luck yet....

I almost pulled the trigger on one... Then I got my ZT 0350OR and decided that I don't need any more folders. I now require some smaller fixed blades to fill the hole in my EDC / survival kit. I'll definitely need a 11, 14, and 24. Love these modification threads... so many ideas not enough money for the knives to mod lol!

Wow - thanks for all the responses and encouragement!!
I tried to make a followup post this morning, but the site wasn't letting me (It did that last time I had a multi-quote post, too).
I actually had 3 considerations for how to proceed.

1 - taking away the ridge near the tip & dropping the spine, turning it into a dual drop as rendered in Dexw's Lemon thread ( http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Ideas-2nd-16-complete?p=13145823#post13145823)

2) Go sheepsfoot/wharnie style, ala ZT0770

3) reverse tanto, ala Benchade Rift/Contego

I think my biggest issue, when I did that (which was Wed morning), was that every time I paused to reassess my direction, the thing tried to look like a wannabe drop point with a touch of Bells palsy. As I shifted to how it looked in the opening post, I was getting freaked out about how much of the knife was disappearing; so I set the basic shape & chose to walk away.

I really liked the idea of the 2nd option; but was intimidated by the prospect of grinding off the existent edge and starting over from scratch (That would have been preferable to just sweeping the spine down, because it would have allowed me to keep more blade length). Maybe some day....

Anyway, I had some free time when I got up today, so I did a little reshaping. I was a little hesitant to lower the spine enough to fully commit to the reverse tanto...not sure, I'm thinking about stopping here (after a little more finish work)

I like the basic shape the way I left it tonight... but, looking at it now, I realize that what it lacks is a swedge. (I think)
I'm not sure I can pull that off - I'll have to find something to practice on.

I'm pretty sure I'll be taking off the guard on this one, and evening out the patina. More pics to come, as it continues to change.
