BK16 sabre vs flat grind

Just got my first 16 in the mail yesterday, nice knife. I agree with most opinions I've read:
-like the handle ergonomics
-like the handle length (if only the Esee 4 handle was this long)
-not super fond of the coating, will most likely strip soon
-not super fond of the sheath, some kydex may soon be in order

All that being said, what is it (besides maybe rarity/collectability) that makes the sabre grind more desirable to some? Personally, I feel like the flat grind will work just fine for me.

I have both and I think the flat ground is a better cutter. A little more metal in the sabre ground but the geometry is slightly different. Some like the beefier blade though.

Honestly if I were to buy one it would be purely for the looks and to add a variation to my collection. Saber looks kinda like a mini BK2. BK 15 looks exactly like a mine BK5 apart from the handles. But since I have never used a saber 16 I couldn't say other then the fact that it may baton better and not get stuck in wood and really pop it apart. But this may be so slight that it was never even noticeable...

My FPR Saber-16 gets used more than my FFG-16, but only because I've had the Saber longer and modded it to be a perfect bush knife. But I think the FFG would be a better choice for most applications. Still, if I could get my hands on an ungraffitied Saber 16 with the powdercoat and laser etch, I'd grab that bad boy in a heartbeat.

What trade and Ethan said.

I'm not a huge fan of sabre grinds in general. Now if one were to take a sabre ground model and blend it into a nice full convex, that would be sweet... almost as keen a geometry as the full-flat grind for cutting performance but with just a little relief for batonning and whatnot.

You mean like just sanding or grinding the shoulder a bit (sounds easy enough)? Or something more than that I'm not picturing?
Also, Buckethead's :thumbup:, but that pic is creeping me out.

Yup! I'd use a belt grinder because that's what I do, but doing it by hand will work too, it will just take a while.

Sorry 'bout the Buckethead pic. It's not my fault, honest :D

Since you mention "collectability", the sabre grind might someday be a collectable. The flat grind supposedly cuts better, but then again that is user dependent as well as which has a sharper blade, as well as what task criteria are you using to determine which is a better cutter? All that said, I prefer the aesthetics of the sabre grind 16.
