Hello all, I'm brand new to the forum so I thought I'd post about my bk2 right off the bat. I'm already in the process of a strip and convex and I have some micarta in the mail as we speak. Once those guys arrive I'd like to dye the scales with son RIT cloth dye. Does anyone have any experience with coloring their scales and if so, any colors that come out better on the canvas? Thinking about an OD green.

Welcome to the Becker Forum, and Bladeforums, glad you joined us. :D

Any dark color is going to be good to go, OD should be just fine. I have found that with lighter colors, RIT Kelly green makes a marvelous OD.

Strip it, and convex it is a good mod to do, as I think mods to knives should be done to enhance the ability to use it, but that said, there are alot of mods that are just done to be done, and they work just fine too.

Once again, welcome, and I look forward to seeing you around more.

Moose

Hi Timmy. I hope you'll stick around and tell us how the mods go. I've not played with micarta much, so I can't help with the techniques of dying it. Perhaps check out OREGON FAL'ER's post #1213 in this pic thread. One of my favorite micarta colors I've seen yet.

link to the thread.

But, don't forget to do something to protect your steel once you've stripped it. (patina, oil, etc.) 1095 is so tasty that rust loves to eat it. :)

Welcome aboard....i am relative noob also..... but this is addicting...........3 Beckers in 2 weeks....... lol

Thank you for the welcome moosez45 I like the feedback, once I get this project all finished ill be posting some pics. I'm still pretty new to mods and such but in the field functionality vs looks goes a long way. That being said, its tough resist a few aesthetic mods knowing the beating ill put it through later.

Thepointyend...thanks for the link. I've been considering a patina for a little while, still need to finish polishing the blade. I'm a little bit OCD when it come to these things. Any paticular method you prefer as far as protection?

Rivertamer....youre telling me! I've been scoping out new models since I got my 2 in the mail. Instant love. My buddy has the 2, 7 and 9 so I get to play with those every now and then. The only purchase I've made since is the 13 which is extremely useful as far as fine work goes. I found myself grabbing it more often than not for little chores around camp.

Thanks Tyler for posting the pic from our outing. I got "big and little brother" together. Fun times.

Hughewil...its funny earlier today just before I joined bladeforums I was admiring the wood handles and custom sheath for your 2.

the secret weapon to dyeing micarta with Rit is to hit it with Tung oil when you're done.

Final product:

Dyed scales, half oiled and half not:

Solid advise, thanks. I'll make sure to pick some up this week before I get started.

Trying to put together a patina collection for you :

I like vinegar, as seen here: on p.2 post #32
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ns-and-Inspirations-Thread-NO-CHATTING!/page2

there are also a few other patinas in there, I like Guyon's mango method as well, There are also more mods in there than should sanely be tried by one person :)

BRL did a mountain man patina a while ago, amongst other mods.

Someone also did a grapefruit patina a while ago, but I can't remember who... looked like galvanized. Pretty cool. Its gotta be the best possible use of the vile citrus in question. :D

but, if you just keep it oiled and don't force a patina, it will get one on its own in time. That's an option, too.

hope this helps.
