IM pretty new to knives, I have a bk2 that came from the box so dull i could safely juggle it... I picked up a lansky sharpener and have been going at it with that, but cant seem to get a good edge. my question is this, what type of an edge does the lansky put onto a knife and is it the best for the bk2? any tips on how to best sharpen the becker? the good news is that i have no real fears of ruining my becker as there is ample steel there! :)

thanks,
nathan

The small stones of a guided system will take forever and a day to work with a blade of that size. Kabar also does a very good heat treatment so its going to take a little extra time to grind but as a benefit the edge gets screaming sharp.

For budget sharpening a Norton Sic stone and a strop will get you sharp and if you want it a bit more refined then I would suggest waterstones.

i had a guided system and it sucked. i'll never waste my money on one again. i get a lot of beckers in for sharpening and most guys have me put a convex edge on them. if you want to do it yourself, i would get a belt sander before going with anything else. i have had quite a few knives sent to me to fix the edges done on the small portable belt sanders that run way too fast to do a good job. this past sunday i had a member (pmc) bring a busse that he tried to sharpen on a portable sander and the edge was so obtuse it was not sharp at all.

nathan, i see that you are from ohio also. if you want to learn how to sharpen, i would be glad to teach you. i have had quite a few members come down to learn how to sharpen knives. check out what pmc had to say about his visit last sunday. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...e-is-important-to-you?p=12340251#post12340251
