I straightened out the rolled over edge as much as I could with leather then worked my way up from 200 grit to 1500 grit sandpaper. This is the end result.

Yep,

Beat it up some more and the next time you sharpen it that will be gone.

Those look kinda gnarly.
How'd that happen?...

Be truthful, you were cutting an old lawnmower in two weren't you? :D

I think it will sharpen out easily, but would recommend turning to something more aggressive than sandpaper. A worksharp would take that out in a couple passes. Even sharpening stones will, with a little work.

Haha! No, not that it wouldn't do the trick. Accidentally hit a rock.

Ouch. That sucks.
I hit a rock in the same spot on my Machax before I convexed it.
After convexing, the ding was 90% gone. It'll be gone the next time I sharpen it though.

It does bug me knowing that it's still there...
That's it!! To the Sharpmaker!!
Thanks for the motivation Thunderwood! Lol :D

No problem.

I pretty much had the same thing happened to my BK9 about a month ago. I was freaking out about it, before finding out I could take a sharpening stone to it and remove them like that.

They're still not entirely gone, but they're so small you have to really look for the nicks. We're talking like thickness of a hair in this case.

not near as gnaly as that bk 9 you snapped. creative rework on it by the way.

Haha. Yeah that was wild!
710 reworked that badboy and it turned out pretty cool.
Uncle E was gracious enough to hook me up with a new Ka-bar laser etched model. :D
He's a class act!

I just gave myself another black fingernail today. :thumbdn: I'ld gladly trade it to you for a dinged knife edge, much less pain involved.

That's pretty bad, I think it'll be a few sharpenings, but it'll come out. The good news is that the gnarl is close to the tip, which you usually don't do much cutting.

I hope it works out for you! Must have been a hard rock, I've hit sandstone very hard with my BK9, somehow it didn't leave a mark! Same with my ESEE 4.

I am not surprised as it happens when you hit the surprise hard object. However, it will disappear when you resharpen it after the next use. You might consider putting a convex edge on it. The convex edges are fairly easy to maintain and they will hold up better under hard use. You might find that the convex edge will minimize the recurrence of chipping or rolling.

Here is a the result of chopping legs off of a deer with my BK4, in the dark on a pallet and not realizing I was hitting nails!
a few passes on the WorkSharp 220 grit then 400 and 6000 fixed it up with a great convex edge.

you could always think of it as poorly serrated:D
beckers love being worked on. and we love working on beckers, even if it's just sharpening.

you have your work cut out for you. but might I suggest a thread by DerekH on 10/26/13. Titled
Make a strop - Part 1
look under how to threads or advanced search the title above.
whats beautiful about these methods is you can build a fairly cheap strop. And when you have made one, you can lay faster working sandpaper to mull out nicks. Then hit it with compound.
I think it's important to learn how to work out a nick, by getting the tools and doing yourself.
I wouldn't be screwed if someone tossed me a sharpening stone, nicked blade & a job to do with it. No judgement just honesty.

I need a worksharp. Anybody have a convex sharpening business? ???

It isn't hard to do yourself with sandpaper and a mouse pad, but if you want someone to do it RichardJ is awesome to work with and a great guy.
