BK2 convex edge

New member here. I've been lurking for long enough and wanted to say hi and that I really enjoy the positive community you all have established here. The humor and razzing is great, too.

I have a BK2 (first Becker of what I'm sure will be many) and would like a convex edge for the ease of maintenance. I'm new to the knife world and have no experience, tools, or (probably most importantly) confidence in doing this myself.

I had a conversation with a gentleman from the services forum and thought we were getting somewhere, but I haven't heard from him in a few weeks and assume he has gotten busy with other projects.

Would any of you be willing to strip and regrind my BK2 or recommend someone who does quality work? I'm willing to pay, of course.

Many thanks in advance and thanks for the enjoyable sense of community here.

Welcome to the Becker Forum, and BladeForums. Glad you stopped in.

You will want to contact Richard J. He will take care of your blade, in the best way. Nothing great things and a great guy.

Stick around and post up some pics after Richard J gets done with ya, we would love to see the work. :D

Once again, welcome.

Moose

I convexed a bk7 no problem myself. Try it yourself. Check out the becker mods thread Derek has got an easy set up for it.

yeh man, really the only tools required are stripper and those spongy nail file thingys. derek should be along shortly to post the link, im just too lazy to search for it to be honest with you

Ok, I found the thread you mentioned and I just might give this a shot. I may be back later this weekend asking what I did wrong! :)

I'd go with Moose's suggestion and have it done with a belt grinder. The reason I say this is a belt grinder can take the profile back further from the edge and give you a higher convex. If you convex only the edge, you will eventually have to remove that metal anyway or get a thicker more blunt profile every time you sharpen it.

also agree. but a homebrew option aint a bad idea for those do it yourselfers. or better yet go to harbor freight, get a 1x30 belt sander and some 400-600-1000 grit belts and have at it. but then again thats me i just jump right in it....

I hear you, but how many knives did you all trash learning to use your belt sanders? I guess they are just a bit intimidating for me, and I like to purchase quality tools that last, like the BK2, and hate the thought of ruining it by attempting a mod beyond my skill-set. Thus the appeal of either the nail file technique or having it done by a pro.

zero. but i did alot of reading and alot of video watching to get the technique. its about angle and speed, keeping the steel cool and working slowly. hell on a whim i ground a clip into the bk2 and fully convexed the shoulderss of the sabre too, first time trying it and it came out well if i do say so myself. If you dont feel comfortable then dont do it, but doing your own modding and sharpening is a good feeling. plus the bk2 is bulletproof just remember you cant put steel back on if you take off to much.

there's also a newish system from the people who make drill doctor that runs around $80 and you can do it yourself... seems easy peasy...

They do look nice. I'm thinking of trying one out.

Whatever you decide, welcome to the forum and congrats on getting a hell of knife. You'll enjoy it.

Worksharp Knife and Tool Sharpener. Great tool. But practice on a couple of knives before doing your BK-2.

Well, Wally-World had the nail files on my way home, so I had a go at it. Pics tomorrow. The grind now feels smooth to the edge. It's also as dull as I've ever seen the poor thing, which just isn't fair to a Becker!

I'm assuming this is the price I pay due to rolling over the grind, but please confirm. I certainly never felt a burr while convexing it. Now it's time to start in with the wet/dry sandpaper, mouse pad, and stropping, yes?

Thanks again to you all for your patience. I promise to pass it on one day when I cross over to the enlightened side. :)
