While on the subject of folders...

This is a BK2 inspired folding knife prototype I made from wood while waiting for the real thing ; )

The action works and it locks in place with a satisfying click - even on this wooden model.

Compared to the BK2 I would have liked a longer blade proportional to the handle, but with folding knives this cant be done...

Pretty cool man. That "wood" be one big folder, haha.

Impressive!
And you're not doing that in steel exactly why??

Might as well make an ankle holster for it, though, 'cause if you put it in your pocket that's where it's gonna end up anyway.

I wanted to make a steel version but according to the local knife makers its too difficult for a novice like me..... That's why its still at the mockup stage.

If I had a workshop with cnc machines and stuff, I would probably go for stainless steel liners and hard anodized aluminium.

Sadly I highly doubt it

The reason is Ethan Becker has only ever designed fixed blades and a lot of his designs are inspired by his life at the joy of cooking and obviously they only use fixed blades in kitchens

If you were to move the pivot a touch further forward and use a pillar construction along the spine, given thick enough liners, you could gain some blade length since the scales would be flush mounted to the liners.

Not only that, but you might be able to use the columns as a track for your lock bar, this would keep it a flow through design and aid in cleaning. It looks like it is mounted towards the rear of the palm, and pulls back to unlock and is spring loaded to keep pressure forward, akin to a Spyderco CBB lock or the cold steel where you pull the butt of the handle to release it.
It seems to be a nice design, but if you were to implement a lock pin to keep pressure exerted on the blade from pushing back on the spring, it might be a bit more secure.

I have a lot on my plate atm, but since I made my 11 a friction folder, I have been thinking of trying to make another folder. I have the scale material, stainless liners, a spare 1/4" pivot, pin stock and some washers, so who knows.
I will do some more thinking on this and see what I can come up with.

Nice work.

Awesome.

Noob question here that has likely been discussed before: are there any chances we'll ever see an official Becker folder?

It has been discussed, it has been designed, it has been prototyped. It's too expensive to do correctly. Closest you're going to get is a Hogue (which I believe even the boss says)

OP, that is pretty badass! Good job on doing the designing. But if you can make it out of wood you could make it out of metal, it might just take a little longer.

I really like the look and am glad you shared it. However, I am a little puzzled by the concept. I am from the school of thought that you don't ask a folder to do a fixed blades job and you don't ask a fixed blade to do a folders job. Making a folder with 1/4 inch blade stock is overkill in my book. It is probably overkill in a fixed blade too, or at least it is for me. I love the Becker handle so maybe a 3/16 version would appeal to me more. If you were to make one with 1/4 stock then my vote would be for very, very thick liners and a sturdy pivot. Maybe a 1/4" grade8 pivot? :D I would try to keep it as bomb proof as possible as that is the idea behind the BK2. Again, the proto looks great and thanks for sharing.

If you can do it this well with wood, i think metal is the next step.

The Tweener handle slabs would be cool and fastener placement would coincide with specialty slabs that are already available.

^My thoughts, a 16 would be perfect for my needs. Then again a 11 would be nice as well, I mean, who doesnt need another edc bottle opener.

Who am i kidding, I like my beefy folders too. Nice work!

5.5 inch blade is legal to carry in Texas, which is what the BK2 has... I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat to replace my Cold Steel 5.5 inch folders
