Hi Beckerheads,
This probably belongs in the making forum, but I hope you like what you see.
DerekH's post inspired me to share too, and Derek, please post as you make progress!
I got tired of waiting for the Tweeners, which will probably be too big for my locale anyway.
I designed what you see below on paper, converted it to a weak cad program, and then sat on it for months. Finally I got together with a friend of mine who is an experienced metal worker and veteran knife maker. He guided me through his shop, shared many of his basic techniques, and together we produced this knife. He did a number of the precision operations, including turning my hilarious attempt at a primary grind into something respectable!
If this turns out well I'd like to take it to small-batch production.
The blade shape is inspired by the AWESOME BK2 (see, on-topic!). This knife shortens the blade and extends the handle compared to the BK11.
In fact, the handle is a little longer than originally intended.
Other sources of inspiration for this non-innovative design were the BK11 (too much blade, too little handle) and Izula-2 (nice spine, not enough blade),
My basic req was 3" blade measurement (with scales attached - local legal max) and enough handle to get a solid grip, without being bulky. It has to be a good field-dressing and all-around rugged outdoors knife. I've got another 8 variations in mind, so if I'm satisfied with this one I'm going to consider going water-jet for a batch of 'em, depending on cost.
Once I polish out the finish (except where the epoxy will go) it will go back to my friend's for heat-treat and scales. I have some 3/16" pin stock - my friend uses larger numbers of smaller pins - so I'll probably bring that back with me en enlarge the holes for better visual balance. The lanyard hole will be exposed.
The steel is 1095, 1/8".
I should probably post this in the general knife-making forum, but here's where I hang out.
OH NO, MY WEBSERVER THAT HOSTS MY IMAGES IS DOWN!!
I'll come back and post the pic when it resurfaces.
Sorry about that, I wrote all this up and then discovered the server issues. :-(
Ok, here it is.
DNS is flakey btw my house and my webserver... apologies.
