I have one of the new BK2s' with the skeletonized handle and last week, I picked up an old used BK2 with the full tang.I was wanting to know are their any advantages between the two versions.

Well the new one is lighter ... If you manage to break either you have done something horribly horribly wrong :D

Seriously though enjoy them both

The only advantage that I can see is that the older ones without the tang cut out are a little bit thinner. So in theory they should cut better. Your results may vary.

In my opinion, the best BK-2 are the new ones with the laser etching.

I'd like to have an older version with the solid tang.

i just got one of these, guess its an in the middle version. it has the cut out tang, but the names are stammped , not laser etched.

I thought the KA-BAR 1st GEN BK-2's with the solid handle were the same thickness as the new one's? Maybe you are referring to the Camillus One's?

I love the balance of my new version bk2.

Where is the balance point on the old, full tang?

Not Exactly sure but I think the balance point and weight are about the same between the two versions because they added the cutouts to lighten and balance it when they added the extended pommel. So between the two changes, it equaled out I think.

I have been trying to get my hands on a KA-BAR 1st gen BK-2 for a while. I think it would be awesome with a tapered tang like I did to the BRUTE. Then maybe a full convex or full flat grind to lighten up the front end.

I'd trade a current production one for a 1st Gen for sure.

But to answer your question, I think the current production model is the best. It is laser etched so there is no chance of micro fractures in the metal from roll stamping. It has an extended pommel so you can beat the knife into a piece or wood or whatever. And you can shove a few Vaseline coated cotton balls in the cutouts under the handle scales for back up fire starting material. (yes, you must have an allen wrench or switch to the slotted screws to access this. haha. But I have enough to make like 10 to 15 fires shoved in my BK-2)

I consulted the Becker blade database and you are correct Dex. I was thinking of the Camillus ones being thinner.

Cool. There have been so many versions of some of these knives that's it's almost impossible to keep up. lol

I think a thinner BK-2 would be the hottest seller ever. They should really consider making one the same thickness as the BK-10 and rest of the line up. Maybe call it the BK-20.

The blade shape and design are just perfect, but for most tasks the 1/4 inch thick is a little over kill sometimes.

The balance point on both versions are the same, about an inch behind the blade or just in front of your index finger in the saber grip.

Thanks for the balance information, guys.

Also, I do like the extended pommel on the new models.

For those wanting a thinner bk2, is the 10 an option? Does the clip point negate having the desired thickness?

I guarantee they do if sales of the current model ever slack off. The knife is probably too popular to mess with right now. Still, I completely agree, and some (Warrior) would say to add some length to it. :)

The BK-10 is a good choice if you want thinner. So is the BK-12 (The Doug Ritter RSK® Mk2 Perseverance™).

Here's some 10 porn.
